Riders battle it out for their HOYS Wild Card

Showjumping riders at the British Showjumping National Championships will be competing to win some of the few remaining spots for Horse of the Year Show. With four Wild Cards up for grabs throughout the show week, running from the 7th – 12th August, the competition promises to be a riveting spectacle delivering a nail biting finale.

The allocation of Wild Cards will be decided on the Sunday afternoon after the British Showjumping Business Partnership International Stairway Final. One Wild Card will be awarded to the each of the following:

  • The winner of the International Stairway League
  • The winner of the International Stairway Final (who will also receive the title of British Showjumping National Champion)
  • The winner of the National Championship Show League which will run across the show culminating with the British Showjumping Business Partnership International Stairway Final on Sunday
  • The highest placed Young Rider (18 to 25 years old) within the top 10 of the National Championship Show League.

The HOYS Wild Card Series has three heats at the six day show; leg one begins on the Friday 10th and leg two follows on the next day with fences starting at 1.40m. Everything builds up to Sunday 12th, with its third and final leg of the Wild Card Series. With fences starting at 1.55m and the coveted British Showjumping National Champion title for the taking, all is set for an exciting competition that will cap off six days of equestrian sport at its best.

With their Wild Card obtained, the lucky riders will be allowed to enter three horses in the International Showjumping classes at Horse of the Year Show 2018 (3rd – 7th October 2018), plus another horse for the renowned HOYS Puissance. Understandably, the chance to compete in one of the UK’s top horse shows and align themselves against the world’s best riders, has made the Wild Card Series a priority for British riders and 60 combinations are set to battle it out in the Championship Arena.

Potential winners include Louise Saywell who will be presenting three of Sultan Saud’s horses whilst the Whitaker family will be sending Jack, Louise and George to represent the family dynasty.

Show ambassador Tim Stockdale will attempt to qualify Mr and Mrs Garratt’s Tornado des Monts for a second experience at Horse of the Year Show and also Miss Fritz an 11 year old chestnut mare owned by Mrs Glasgow.

Jessica Dimmock has chosen two Billy Stud horses; Billy in Fashion and Billy Bluebell in her bid to take the title and will be up against crowd favourite Geoff Billington and Con Man JX.

Back after a successful Young Rider European Championship, the 2017 Under 18 and Under 21 Champion, William Fletcher, will be trying his luck with Persimmon (the first horse to have completed two international championships in different disciplines) as well as his faithful Everytime Anywhere B.

Will Robert Smith and his 2016 champion, Cimano E be able to reconquer the title? Or will reigning champions Annabel Shields and Wet Wet Wet manage to keep suitors away from their crown? Join us for a fabulous week of showjumping to find out.

Spectator entry is free. Parking is £5 per car. For more information please go to http://www.bsnationalchampionships.com/  or call 02476 858205.
