The Girls Fly High in La Baule Nations Cup

The opening leg of the 2019 Longines FEI CSIO5* Nations Cup series kicked off for Great Britain this afternoon in the French coastal region of La Baule with clears being delivered by two of the team of four.

Riding under the title sponsor banner of Team NAF, it was Amy Inglis, from Haywards Heath, with Wishes, an 11 year-old homebred chestnut mare owned by her mother Claire that really made her presence felt. Making her Top Level Nations Cup debut, having only just come out of Young Riders, she posted the first clear for Great Britain in the second round and only just narrowly missed out on a double clear when she finished with just one time penalty in the second.

Joining her in posting a clear for the team was Holly Smith from Loughborough with Hearts Destiny, a 10 year-old British Bred bay gelding she co-owns with T J Hall Limited. A superb second round saw them post another much needed zero penalty round for Great Britain in what hadn’t been the best of opening competitions for them.

Despite the two clears and single penalty time fault picked up by both riders it was a 7th place finish for GB with their cumulative score of 24 penalties. Harry Charles, who at 19 years was also making his debut top level appearance picked up some penalties on course across both rounds with the 12 year-old stallion Lordanos Junior owned by Hill House Equine as did William Funnell with his homebred Billy Buckingham owned by the Billy Stud.

It was Switzerland who claimed the title finishing on just 4 penalties with Belgium taking 2nd with just one time penalty behind them. France, Ireland, Brazil and Germany took 3rd – 6th place respectively with Canada finishing behind us in 8th place on 50 penalties.

Talking after the event Di Lampard, World Class Performance Manager for Showjumping commented “It’s been a disappointing day for us as a team however individually Amy has absolutely shone in what was her debut appearance at this level. She has unbelievable focus and to see her achieve what she did on a homebred mare that she has produced from the outset is quite phenomenal. She has planned for this with great detail and to see it pay off with her jumping a double clear, albeit with one time fault, it is an absolute credit to her and she has proved herself and Wishes to be a great combination for the future. Also, Holly Smith delivered a brilliant round in the form that we have known them for and it was great to see them come back in this way.”
