British Young Horse Showjumping Championships 2018

Monday 20 August 2018

New champions were crowned and an abundance of talent was on display at the 2018 British Young Horse Showjumping Championships at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre.

Matt Sampson landed the 7-year-old title and a place in the HOYS Talent Seekers Championship with a catch ride, forging ahead at his first show with Harry Whall’s Spike Z in a nail-biting finale. “It’s only our third time in the ring,” said Matt.

It was a race was between Matt and Carron Nicol with two rides apiece in the five-strong jump-off. Carron’s opener on Nistria VD Winning Z was immediately overtaken by Matt on Cristo Beech. But Carron came back fighting on the Cabrio Van De Heffinck daughter Ginadina PP – a recent purchase from Sovereign Equestrian – and wiped away more than a second.  The efforts also earned a HOYS Talent Seekers place.

Matt was tighter and quicker on the Spartacus x Cantero stallion Spike to secure victory by 0.71 seconds. “He has so much scope although he’s still quite green,” said Harry, who bought the talented youngster three years ago.

George Whitaker lifted the British-bred 6-year-old championship on Shooting Star. Only two clears were produced and George went head-to-head with Lauren Edwards on Andy Doswell’s Breit Star (Breitling LS x Sir Corland). Both hit the vertical at fence 2 but George was fractionally quicker. The Voss x Indoctro gelding Shooting Star was bred by George’s uncle, the legendary John Whitaker.

“He’d never been to a show and John brought him over [to the family home] for a jump round and I really liked him, asked to buy him and ended up with a half share as long as I got the ride,” said George.

Max Routledge secured the non British-bred 6-year-old final on Liam Williams’ Memphis V/D Vaart in a hotly-competitive 10-horse jump-off. “He had a good start to the year in Spain and only had one fence down in the whole five weeks,” said Max, who meets the Elvis Ter Putte x Up Chiqui gelding at shows – “He’s straightforward and was due a win.”

Donald Whitaker finished fifth on Tom Williams’ scopey Chilli and claimed the whole of the 6-year-old £4,000 bonus on offer for jumping clear every day.

A flying round from Helen Rees and her home-bred Bianca Du Rouet claimed the British-bred 5-year-old title in a strong 11-horse decider. “She has a naturally fast pace and likes to jump out of it and it’s easier to go with her – we just argue if I try to slow her down,” said Helen on the feisty chestnut mare.  “Everything about her is hot and she likes to do it all quickly.”

Bianca – by the Stakkato stallion son Statinus and out of a Balou Du Rouet mare – has history connected with this show. “We bought her mother at the Brightwells Sale here six years ago in foal with her,” said Helen.

Maisie Drea and Barry Drea’s ultra-quick Cairo Z III galloped to victory in the non British-bred 5-year-old final. “She’s been a winner from day one,” said Maisie, who won both 5-year-old grands prix at the two Oliva Nova, Spain, tours earlier in the year.  “Counting today’s win, she’s already won over £4,000.”

The Clintissimo Z x Renkum Valentino mare was purchased twelve months ago. “She was actually bred in Lancashire but has a Zangersheide passport so had to jump in the non British-breds,” said Maisie, one of seven to also post clears every day and take a share of the £4,000 bonus.

Two British-breds claimed a share of the bonus – Charlotte Flack on Billy Conveyor (Billy Um Bongo x Cordalme) and Laura Robinson’s Millfield Colette (Cornet Obolensky x Clearway) alongside Maisie and Cairo Z III, William Rekert with Claxson Van De Bosweg (Codex I x Carthago), Alex Hempleman with Jammy Dodger II (Vagabond De La Pomme x Heartbreaker). Donald Whitaker on Nero VD Kwade Heyde (Echo Van T Spieveld x Lux Z) and Chloe Reynolds aboard Darjeeling Desir( (Mozart Des Hayettes x GabyScion) from the non British-bred section.

Mennell Watson pocketed the lion’s share of the prize money in the 8-year-old and over stallions and mares classes with Euro Sport Horse and Helen Van Heyningen’s home-bred Whisper In The Wind. Fourth on day one and taking the highest placed stallion £500 bonus, the Cobretti x Mr Majestic 10-year-old came to the fore in the second class, winning from the front of the four-horse jump-off to land a handsome £1,500 - £1,000 as the winner and another £500 bonus.

In a repeat of day one’s result, Charlotte Flack was again second on Henry Harding’s Luidam 13-year-old Ashdale Luxara for the highest placed mare bonus.

Lauren Edwards claimed the first of the stallions and mares class and the top mare award with Andy Doswell’s Zirocco Blue VDL x Emilion nine-year-old Ella Sandra G.

Only two 4-year-olds posted double clears in their final to take home £1,000 clear round bonus – Hannah Berryman’s HGS Joy and Toni Bagley with Luckas. Hannah acquired the Billy Congo x Fan Holland HGS Joy unbroken. “She’s so consistent,” said Hannah, who took on every fence on a forward stride – “I don’t have much choice, she likes quick!”

Toni Bagley was equal first with the Why Me x Up to Date gelding Luckas, bought unbroken from Sarah Winterbottom a year ago.
