CHEPSTOW INTERNATIONAL CSI**

Youth triumphed in the feature 2* Grand Prix at Chepstow Summer International as young rider Emily Ward, 20, raced to victory with Millioninmind in an edge-of-your-seats jump-off.

Forty-nine competitors tackled the Longines Ranking 1.45m thirteen fence track designed by Italy’s Andrea Colombo and just nine came forward to the jump-off as riders were tested by square oxers and committed lines.

Nigel Coupe set an opening target with Golvers Hill but his lead was short-lived as Emily was tighter and quicker, galloping across the big arena to the final vertical to wipe away more than three seconds on the VDL Douglas 12-year-old Millioninmind.

“He’s such fun, very fast and he’ll try his hardest to jump the fences, he’s perfect for me,” said Emily, who suffered an anxious moment when the martingale broke three from home – “Once he’s in the zone, things like that don’t affect him, he’s too focused.”

Harry Charles was in contention all the way and beat Emily’s time by 1.43 seconds but Vivaldi Du Dom tapped out the top rail of the final vertical to drop to fifth.  Oliver Fletcher was nearest rival for second on Temple Rebus and Scarlett Charles filled third place on Lordanos Junior.

Georgia Tame’s incredible winning run on Quintella – the new partnership of one month have won every week for four weeks – continued with a hat-trick of wins.  After taking both the 1.40m jump-off and the two-phase classes on the first two days, the pair went on to take a hotly contended Medium Tour Grand Prix with a storming round.

Only six of forty-four starters reached the jump-off.  Annabel Shields set a challenge on Wet Wet Wet and Georgia took it on with her foot to the floor on the 11-year-old mare Quintella to slice 0.88 seconds off the time.

“She’s so quick across the floor without even trying,” said Georgia.

Annabel and her favourite Mr Blue 15-year-old Wet Wet Wet came to the fore in day one’s Medium Tour 1.35m single-phase 0.98 seconds.

“He makes it all so much fun, it’s great to have him back after he had nine months off,” said Annabel, who pushed Sian Edwards and Adriarna into second.

Sian headed the Medium Tour 1.35m speed with the 12-year-old Argentinus mare with more than two seconds in hand.

“She’s a little winner and loves to go fast,” said Sian.

William Funnell secured the top spot in the Small Grand Prix with a deceptively fast round on Billy Spiral.

The fifty-three starters were reduced to eleven for the jump-off with fourth-drawn William easing the Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve x Billy Mexico home-bred 7-year-old into a 0.37 second victory.

“I just kept her in a nice rhythm; Lucy [Townley] has produced her and done a good job, hopefully she’ll return [from just giving birth to her first daughter] to jump her in the Foxhunter final,” said William.

Joe Fernyhough claimed the Big Tour 1.40m speed with a fast, decisive round on the Westpoint Quickfire 9-year-old Calcourt Quicktime with 0.66 sec to spare over Angie Thompson’s Fremont VDL in an eighteen-horse class.  And Joe claimed two wins in the 1* Silver Tour 1.15m two-phase and 1.20m Speed with the 11-year-old Louisiana.

“She’s really careful and a little winner,” he said.

Jake Saywell outpaced all to take the Medium Tour 1.35m accumulator with the speedy and ultra-careful Irish-bred 15-year-old Touch Of Chilli with 1.80 seconds to spare.

Adam Botham secured the win in initial Small Tour 1.30m single-phase with the 15-year-old Zidane VIII.

“He’s a little superstar and he’s got a home for life now,” said Adam, who relegated Helen Rees and Bart VI by half a second.

Helen went one better in the Small Tour 1.30m accumulator by 2.40 seconds with the Lord Z 13-year-old Bart.

“He loves jumping at speed,” said Helen.

Nicole Pavitt captured the final day’s Small Tour 1.30m speed in typical style with seasoned campaigner Victor Blue, the evergreen 17-year-old winning by 2.66 seconds.

Gemma Ellison landed the concluding Gold Tour Grand Prix from the front in a four-way jump-off with the only double clear on Fernhill Off Chance.

“He loves pace and is so careful but he’s brave with pace, I can always trust him to gallop to a fence,” said Gemma, who bought the Sligo Candy Boy 7-year-old from Ireland 15 months ago.

Katinka Brogaard secured the Silver Grand Prix with the final round of the five-horse jump-off on the eye-catching Hotline, a Dutch-bred 7-year-old gelding bought as a just backed 4-year-old.

“I’ve brought him on slowly as he is so careful but he finds it all so easy,” said Katinka.

Milli Cornock doubled up with two Grand Prix wins with Bronze and 5-year-old titles.  She has quickly established a partnership with the 10-year-old Berlin daughter Boavista D’Elsendam Z after buying her seven weeks ago and the pair claimed a hat-trick of wins.  After claiming the Bronze 1.05m accumulator, the pair headed the Bronze Grand Prix in fine style in a fast and furious 25-strong jump-off and went on to take the final day’s Silver 1.15m accumulator.

“The faster we go, the better she is,” said Milli, who also brought Course Designer Paul Connor’s Just Do It to the front in the 5-year-old Grand Prix.

An eventual ten contended the third and final round against the clock with Milli smoothly executing an inside turn to a vertical to win by 0.85 seconds.

“He’s a bit of a character and wants to play all the time but he manages to jump the jumps in the ring and just plays in between the fences,” said Milli.

Tim Page jumped to the top in a nine-strong jump-off to take the 6-year-old Grand Prix on Hillcoote Border Fox, winning by 0.74 seconds.

The promising Irish-bred stallion son of Pacino out of a Cruising mare has just returned from competing at Royal Dublin and finished third in the 6-year-old Final.

Jodie Burchmore-Eames commandingly landed the Gold 148cm Grand Prix with the sole first round clear on the 7-year-old Mighty Mouse W Van De Dauwhoeve.

“This is the first JA class we have jumped and it is like all of my dreams have come true,” said an overwhelmed Jodie, who is through to the HOYS Pony Newcomers and Foxhunter Finals on this consistent mare.

Elloise Smit doubled up in the Gold 148cm classes with the 17-year-old Newtown Samson, winning the single-phase by more than six seconds and taking the speed with 3.28 seconds in hand.

Patrick Thurston headed the Silver 148cm Grand Prix with the only double clear on the 12-year-old Hector Laenan Roshoeve at only their second show together in a head-to-head with Atiya Bussey aboard Keelnacally Quilletto Robuck.
