Children, Junior & Young Rider European Championships Round Up

The Team NAF Children, Juniors & Young Riders were in action at the European Championships in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands last week. The competition took place between the 7th – 14th July 2019 at the Showground Jan Broek Stables and the highlight for Great Britain came via the Children who won the Team Bronze medal on Thursday.

Children
Under the guidance of Chef d'Equipe Clare Whitaker, competition started on Tuesday for the Children and at the end of that first day, Great Britain remained on zero penalties, a score which saw them share the top spot with eight other nations. The first round of the Team Final proved to be a stiffer test with just Austria, Germany and The Netherlands able to stay on zero and Great Britain just behind them in fourth on 2 penalties. With the second round still to come, the Team medals were going to prove to be hard fought for but the Brits belied their young ages and rode with great accuracy and maturity to add nothing to the 2 penalties that they were carrying and this guaranteed them the Team Bronze. Germany and The Netherlands were the two teams able to remain on zero penalties and the Team Gold was eventually taken by The Netherlands after a thrilling jump off against the Germans who took the Team Silver. The four combinations representing the team were as follows:

  • Amelie Gachoud, aged 14, from West Horsley, Surrey with HMF Evito, a 10 year-old bay gelding owned by HMF Equestrian
  • Aimee Jones, aged 14, from Shrewsbury, Shropshire with Zoverla, a 15 year-old chestnut mare owned by Alison Sargeant
  • Tabitha Kyle, aged 12, from Loughborough, Leicestershire with Grennanstown Sarco Luxhill, a 9 year-old bay gelding owned by Holly Smith
  • Chloe Lemieux, aged 13, from Southampton, Hampshire with Freya, a 9 year-old bay mare owned by Robert Lemieux

Phoebe Farman, aged 13, from Cranleigh, Surrey and Calle, a 19 year-old bay gelding owned by Tracy Priest and Penelope Priest competed as individuals.

The focus for the Children then moved to the Individual Final on Saturday and it was Tabitha Kyle and Grennanstown Sarco Luxhill who were the highest up the order for Great Britain. They finished just outside the medals in 5th. Aimee Jones & Zoverla, Chloe Lemieux & Freya and Amelie Gachoud & HMF Evito also produced some great rounds with Phoebe Farman & Calle jumping in the Farewell Competition. Juniors
The Juniors got their campaign underway on Wednesday and were jumping under the watchful eye of their Chef d’Equipe Tony Newbery. Despite producing some solid rounds across all three competitions that count towards the Team Final standings, the team unfortunately missed out on a medal after finishing in 6th place overall, with the full standings available here - https://bit.ly/32mXbyx. All five did however qualify for their respective Individual Final and the Junior squad was as follows:

  • Sienna Charles, aged 16, from Alton, Hampshire with Chinta van Geluut Z, a 10 year-old chestnut mare owned by Hill House Equine Ltd
  • Oliver Fletcher, aged 16, from Faringdon, Oxfordshire with Hello Disckoboy D.N., an 11 year old grey gelding owned by Lady Kirkham and Lady Harris
  • Lily Freeman-Attwood, aged 17, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire with Karibou Horta, a 9 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Eurohorse – Axel Verlooy
  • Oliver Tuff, aged 16, from Totnes, Devon with Darino B, an 11 year-old bay gelding owned by Jo Bishop and Justin Tuff
  • Jack Whitaker, aged 17, from Whatton, Nottinghamshire with Scenletha, a 9 year-old dark brown mare owned by Michael Whitaker

Jack Whitaker & Scenletha produced an immaculate double clear in Sunday’s Individual Final to climb seven places and finish in 8th. We also saw some strong rounds of jumping from his other teammates. For the final Individual standings, click here - https://bit.ly/2LSEKM7.

Young Riders
The Young Riders also began jumping on Wednesday and Tony Newbery was once again the Chef d’Equipe. The test set for the Young Riders in each round was tough and it wasn’t to be a medal winning competition for the Brits even with them delivering some strong rounds. The Team eventually finished in 7th and the final results can be found here - https://bit.ly/2Gdmppz. The Young Rider squad was as follows:

  • Leonie Aitkenhead, aged 21, from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire with Jimmy Mack van Berkenbroeck, a 10 year-old bay gelding owned by Beverley Aitkenhead
  • Graham Babes, aged 21, from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire with Boucheron, a 13 year-old bay gelding owned by Graham
  • William Fletcher, aged 20, from Faringdon, Oxfordshire with Persimmon, a 13 year-old brown gelding owned by Graham Fletcher
  • Jodie Hall-McAteer, aged 19, from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire with Salt N Peppa, a 10 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Mandy Hall
  • Joseph Stockdale, aged 19, from Roade, Northamptonshire with Don Diego de Plata, a 10 year-old bay gelding owned by Laura Stockdale

William Fletcher & Persimmon were the sole representatives in the Individual Final after producing three brilliant rounds earlier on in the Championships. As a result, they finished as the highest placed Brits and the final standings are available here - https://bit.ly/2JxBfZT.
