The second show centre to hold the first weekend of Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds was Vale View Equestrian Centre in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Qualifying tickets for the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m National Amateur Finals at the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool on 12 – 17 November were on offer.

An array of competitors came forward to take on Beau Wood’s ten fence first round track in the 85cm second round with their hopes of gaining a qualifying ticket to the finals. Eight of those starting combinations managed to keep a clean sheet in the first round and therefore each of them gained a qualifying spot.

Uttoxeter based Jenna Watson clinched a one-two with Sandra Watson’s Celebrations, an 18 year-old chestnut mare whom Jenna has ridden for three years and Columbcille Colleen, a 20 year-old bay mare who Jenna has been competing since 2011, respectively. Jenna produced two foot perfect clears both in quick times leaving Deborah Bateson settling for third place with Alchemy Histronix.

Dodson & Horrell 95cm National Amateur Second Round

Course Designer Beau Woods set a challenging eleven fence track for the 95cm second round as problems occurred all around the course. Seven combinations accomplished a first round clear with four of those going on to remain faultless in the jump-off.

Julia Helm from Shrewley, Warwickshire rode her own trusty homebred gelding Helms Tolu. The 20 year-old has been ridden by Julia for his entire jumping career which began in 2003. They took the win with a lightning fast round of 28.22 seconds with 4.72 seconds in hand over runner up Nicola Pritchard and Golden Major Magic.

Dodson & Horrell 1.05m National Amateur Second Round

Seven of the starting combinations in the 1.05m second round made light work of the tough first round track set by Beau Woods. All seven secured their qualifying tickets with a first round clear but the placings were dependent on the jump-off.

Having already secured two qualifying tickets in the previous classes with Billy Image, Doncaster based Devon Grimes made her successful show even better by landing the win, this time with her second ride Miss Silver Dollar, a 14 year-old grey mare who Devon started competing this time last year. The pair produced the fastest round of the class crossing the finish line in 38.01 seconds, 1.49 seconds ahead of runner up Sarah Holmes and Sir Cassiano.
