Five times a winner; Emma-Jo Slater takes the KBIS Insurance Senior British Novice Championship

Emma-Jo Slater partnered with five year old Kimba Uttah owned by Kim Barzilay won the KBIS Insurance Senior British Novice Championship on Day 5 of the British Showjumping National Championships 2018. There was a strong jump off of 28 horse/rider combinations going through and Emma-Jo was the first one to go in, setting the standard. She said: “I was the first one in the jump off so I went in to go clear and definitely left room for people to go faster than me. There were other riders who had a faster time by the end of the class but they paid the price by having a fence. I was quite surprised to have won but I am obviously delighted.”

This is the fifth time Emma-Jo Slater from Buckinghamshire has won this Championship; last year she won it riding another of Kim’s horses, Kings of Leon. Kim commented: “We aim all our young horses at the national finals so to win this class for a second year in a row is fantastic.”

The aim for Kimba Uttah, known as Todi, in 2019 is to jump the Newcomers and Foxhunter second rounds. “For Todi’s large size he is incredibly obedient and knows where his legs are. We are able to do all the twists and turns which we practice a lot at home. He is only five years old so we try to keep things fun to avoid him getting bored. Todi is half-brother to Billy Twomey’s International ride Kimba Flamenco (Codi); they are out of the same mare.”

Kim has travelled back from Dublin on Friday evening after watching Kimba Flamenco. Kim hopes Todi will produce similar results as Codi when he is older. Emma-Jo and Todi will be contesting the Nupafeed Supplements Senior Discovery Championship tomorrow morning.

It is not only competitors who are guaranteed a fabulous day out, the British Showjumping National Championships also offers a great family day of exciting competition, hospitality and afternoon tea offerings and a retail shopping village. Entry for spectators wishing to take advantage of this fantastic show is free and parking is only £5 per car.
