Maverick win for Poppy in the Pony Discovery Championship Final
Thursday 08 August 2019
Bringing the junior classes at the British Showjumping National Championships to a close was the Pony Discovery Championship Final. The final saw 86 starters come forward and despite exceptional talent on display, there were just 18 through to the jump off, of which only 8 riders achieved a double clear. In the fastest time, and taking the Pony Discovery title, was 14-year-old Poppy Dargan riding 10-year-old Brynithon the Maverick.
When asked about how she tackled the course, Poppy explained how she “worked hard to keep him [Brynithon the Maverick] focused, taking the turns carefully to come home clear”. Poppy, having already won the Kierson Restoration Pony Bright Star Championship Qualifier 1.00m with Brynithon the Maverick earlier this year, was over the moon to have won such a big title, exclaiming “I can’t believe it, it’s just amazing”. The combination’s future plans are to make the most of their last couple of years competing together by getting their Foxhunters double clears.
In an exceptionally close jump off, and just 0.11 seconds behind the winning pair’s time of 35.47s, was second place combination Megan Trott, and her pony Quay.
