Brits took the lion’s share of victories in the dazzling sunshine at the inaugural Allington Arena UK International, but they were denied the big one. The USA’s Laura Kraut came to the fore in the top-billed 1.45m Large Tour Grand Prix with new ride Cavalia.

Bernardo Costa Cabral tested forty-five riders with a thirteen fence track and thirteen found the answers to access the jump-off.  Laura set a quick time in mid-draw and despite Ireland’s Billy Twomey’s late challenge on Ardcolum Duke, she held on to victory.

“This was our first show, and the two star here was a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other,” said Laura, on the Dutch-bred 8 year-old grey mare owned by St. Bride’s Farm. “This was a good beginning.”

Slotting just behind Billy, Tim Gredley was best placed Brit in third on Unex Competition Yard Ltd’s Unex Arantos, a 10 year-old sired by Concorde and bought from David Simpson and Louise Pavitt at the end of last year. “He’s a lovely horse and improves every time out,” said Tim.

George Whitaker landed the Large Tour two phase, maximising Ian Whitaker’s 12 year-old chestnut gelding Willetton’s ground-eating stride. “He’s naturally quick and this track suited us, I could open him up,” said George, who travels to Belgium in July to take up his European Equestrian Federation Athenaeum Young Rider Academy Award with Olympian Jos Lansink.

James Hughes maximised on his own 12 year-old bay stallions Peiter VI’s big stride to secure the first Large Tour 1.40m. “He’s so quick across the floor and nothing fazes him, he’ll jump grand prix, speed or Derby courses,” said James, whose big aim with the German-bred 12-year-old is the Hickstead Derby.

Holly Gillott is riding on the crest of a wave.  A member of the recent, victorious five star Nations Cup team at Rome with Dougie Douglas, Holly won three classes here.

She claimed the Medium Tour Grand Prix with Quality Old Joker, an Irish-bred 7 year-old bay gelding jointly owned with James Mossman. “He’s 17.2hh but very nimble,” she said.

Shannondale Oso, another Irish-bred gelding owned by Gems McCormick, headed the Gold Tour Grand Prix. “He didn’t start showjumping until he was a 7 year-old, but he’s very careful, I think he’ll go on to make a good horse,” said Holly on the 10 year-old chestnut gelding.

The super quality Elore, also owned by Gems McCormick, rounded up the hat-trick with the 6 Year-Old Grand Prix for Holly.  This bay mare by Namelus R recently qualified for the Horse of the Year Show Foxhunter Championship. “I haven’t done that many shows with her, but she wins everywhere I take her,” said Holly.

Keith Shore maintained his early lead on Rubiroso JX despite several challenges to take the first of the Medium Tour classes. “It’s nice to have International shows at home instead of travelling abroad,” said Keith, who has ridden the 11 year-old chestnut  gelding Rubiroso for four years and bought him last week. “He loves big rings and likes to keep moving.”

Keith looked to be a double winner on day two with quick rounds on Zegreanne Z and Rubiroso JX, but eventually took second and third when Joe Clayton found a slightly shorter route.
“I didn’t see Keith’s first round but I knew he’d be fast and I’d have to do something special,” said Joe, who clipped a second off the leading time with Michael Whitaker’s 9 year-old chestnut mare Bonita Z. “We know each other so well and she loves going fast,” said Joe.
Keith claimed his double of wins with the Small Tour Grand Prix on the 17 year-old bay mare Zegreanne Z owned by the Springs Equestrian Partnership. “She loves winning, she won six out of nine classes in Austria, and two out of two at Suffolk County,” he said.

A flying round earned Ben Raistrick the Small Tour on day two with Dan Wright’s 15 year-old chestnut gelding Top Limit, a new ride of two months. “This is our first big show, I’m still getting to know him,” said Ben, who is now based in Penkridge, Staffordshire, riding for Dan and Halsall Electrical.

Beth Vernon headed the Small Tour on day one with a quick, decisive round on Omane De Faux, a 13 year-old chestnut gelding owned by Vicky Young. “I didn’t think I was quick enough to win, this is my first show back since having pneumonia, and I’m still catching my breath,” she said.

Jake Saywell took the Five Year-Old Grand Prix with the impressive Quimari W, a bay stallion by Quidam B Z and owned by Andrew Saywell. “We’ve taken him easy over the winter and let him grow up, but he finds it all so easy,” said Jake.
