POYS 2013 Results!

Wednesday 10 April 2013

Pony riders flocked to a fun-filled, four-day showjumping extravaganza which offered prizes galore from ipads to tack and teddy bears, and of course, the obligatory Easter eggs.

Sunday night’s atmospheric gala night reached a thrilling climax with the top-billed JA grand prix producing only two clears.  Amy Inglis was again foot-perfect on Lea Du Genier to win over Lucy Warren, in her first grand prix with Irish Hot Shot.

“It was a technical track, but if worked in our favour” said Amy, who got Lea in October from Lisa Nooren.

“She’s amazing and is just getting better.”

The British Showjumping special finals saw up-and-coming riders take their first championship wins.

Claudia Seara only started riding four years ago, and achieved the 148cm title on Ilar Max, who finished second in this class last year with Emily Ward.

“Emily and her dad Nick have helped me so much” said Claudia, who trains with them three times a week and bought this schoolmaster pony 18 months ago.

Georgia Taylor-Jones gained her biggest win with the 128/138cm section on Errigal Blaze.

“He takes me to the fences and gives me so much confidence” said Georgia, 12, who will make her first visit to Hickstead in the 138cm final.

Jack Whitaker claimed second with Dinki Diva, but went on to take his own sash on Barnee Rubble in the 128cm grand prix.  It was the first of his 2013 ambitions realised.

“This is my final 128cm year and I want to do the lot – Hickstead, HOYS and Olympia.”

They were top gun here with the only triple clear, although their time was competitive.

“Barnee was fresh, but I’m used to handling him” he said.

An almost impossibly tight turn to an oxer gained Jessica Hewitt a breath-taking seven sec for the 138cm grand prix with Rapkyns Paddy’s Day.

“She’s amazing, so careful and trustworthy” said Jessica, also leading rider on this grey mare she has ridden for two years.

Holly Grimwade, 11, defied the odds by taking the 11-year-old and under grand prix for the second year running on Golden Friskey and leading rider.  It was a formidable task, 29 clears came forward from 61 starters.

“It must be a record, Friskey also won five years ago [with Chloe Hyde]” said Danbury Park Primary school, Essex pupil Holly, who praised trainer Rosie Holder, “She’s helped since my unaffiliated days.”

Third-placed here, Tegan Rowlands impressed with her neat, competent style in the British Showjumping 10-year-old and under style and performance on Bejowans Just Jack.  After three rounds, she took the title by an incredible 31 points.

The children-on-horses final – a first for POYS – proved popular with 42 entries, but the grand prix predictably fell to the on-form Emily Ward and Witch.  They took first and second in the two preliminary rounds to also claim leading rider.

“She knows her job and gets on with it, I was so lucky to get her as my first horse” said Emily, who was deservedly awarded the Sheila Elstone trophy for best up-and-coming rider.

A delighted Emma Shingles took home a coveted tack-locker for winning the Intermediate grand prix on Tequila Twist.

“It made me ultra determined in the jump-off” said Emma, who doubled up with the leading rider award for their second and sixth places in the qualifiers.

Jared Lunn made a triumphant return to POYS.  He was 2012 novice champion with Bally Baloo, and 2013 saw him claim the JC grand prix for an impressive ipad prize on his Scope adventurer champion Lahinch Katie.

Claudia Harrison-Guess took the leading rider title with Cavaliers Royale Princess.

Unbeatable partnership Miles O’Donnell and Jozefien R netted the novice grand prix in a hotly contended jump-off.  And the pair also took leading rider after heading both qualifying rounds.

“She was sharp when we got her five months ago” said Hampshire-based Miles, 15, who credits trainer Gayle White for the wins, “We’ve done lots of work.”

Mimi Beecher’s final round in the final class triumphed for the Intro grand prix title and leading rider on Jou Jou MQ.

“He’s so quick across the floor and brilliant at turning” said Mimi, back at her second show with this 12-year-old after a six week break.
