Jaz Shares her Steps to Gold

On Tuesday 8th September we travelled to Keysoe for the last 'Step up to Gold' training session for the 2015 riders.  We met in the restaurant for a catch up session and gave feedback of the year; things that worked for us, how our training has progressed and where we are now in our training regime.

My first training session was on my young horse. It was great experience for her being her first proper outing and a lot to take in too! She progressed well though and I was very pleased with her improvement over the two days.  Later I had a session with Clio my Grade A. I warmed her up and jumped round a short course, which she flew round!  We then went back to the restaurant and reviewed our videos and also compared them with videos taken on our selection day. It was quite interesting to see the difference for all of us, and that we’ve all made improvements. For me, I was able to see that I now ride courses in a stronger canter and in more of a rhythm, which has been a contributing factor to Clio becoming consistent at 1.30m level.

We then put our horses away for the evening and headed to the local pub for a meal. It was a lovely way to spend our last training camp together, even if we did manage to get lost on the 10 minute journey back to Keysoe!!

The next day was a normal British Showjumping competition day for Keysoe. I started off with the 85cm clear round with my novice Zizi. She jumped two lovely rounds over a spooky course of fillers and won her first rosette! I was really pleased with how she progressed over the two days and am looking forward to her future.

A long wait then for the National 1.30m with Clio, which gave me time to watch and support the other girls on the programme. Clio warmed up really well and jumped a lovely double clear, only just missing out on the placings.

I would like to thank British Showjumping for giving me the opportunity to take part in the programme, it has been of huge benefit to me and I’ve met some lovely people along the way. My favourite part was competing in Bonheiden in April, it was a massive learning curve for both Clio and myself and a bonus to come home with two placings.

I would also like to express my thanks to my coaches Matt Lanni and Carl Belson.

This is a brilliant programme and I would strongly recommend it to anyone!
