ALEXANDERS HORSEBOXES BRITISH SHOWJUMPING SCOPE FESTIVAL - TUESDAY
Wednesday 27 August 2014
Rain marred play on Tuesday at Stafford Showground, with all outdoor rings cancelled because of Monday’s constant downfall affecting the going. But championships in the indoor arena went ahead as planned, and dreams were realised or lost by the clock or the fall of a pole.
Sammie-Jo Coffin is off to the Horse of the Year Show after heading the Horse and Hound Foxhunter Masters with Liz Robson’s Bellamy II. “She’s been third twice in the qualifiers, finally we made it, it was worth the journey,” said Cornwall based Sammie-Jo, who has also qualified this eight-year-old mare by Cardento for the Speedi-Beet grade C final.
Derek Morton proved he was a fit senior rider with four horses in the Kingairloch Highland Estate National Senior Rider Championship, and took first, second and fifth. Working hunter supremo – three times a HOYS winner – Keep Talking claimed the title for Derek, with Zagy in second and Varo Beech fifth. And to underscore Derek’s talent, Vere Phillipps took third on Skerne Scipio – produced by Derek and his 2013 HOYS newcomers ride until sold earlier this year.
Jan Davison’s Cyloma Z made a winning return to the Stafford arena. Four-year-old victor last year with Emma Sargeant in the saddle, this time the five-year-old mare was ridden by Emma’s sister Katie Shaw. “Emma’s second baby is due in September,” said Katie, who took over in April. “She’s not ready for the five-year-old as she’s only jumped two newcomers, this was the class for her.”
Chloe Reynolds is enjoying a tremendous year, and added the Blue Chip Feeds pony newcomers masters title to her tally on Kayleighs Star – her current Blue Chip coral champion. The nine-year-old 148cm, previously evented in horse classes by owner Sophie Digby, joined Chloe last year in British Novice grade, and the pair contended the HOYS pony newcomers in 2013.
This year, they target both newcomer and Foxhunter.“Star is jumping the JA classes now, and I can’t thank Sophie enough for letting me ride her.”
You had to be up with the birds for the Waddesdon Stud Pony Restricted Rider 1.10m championship with a 7.30am start. But a delighted Amanda Clark gained a coveted rug and sash to gallop on her lap of honour with the 17-year-old Picadero.
