Jake Saywell Heads Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round at Wales and West Show

Nineteen year-old Jake Saywell headed an ultra-competitive Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round yesterday at Wales and West Show in Chepstow, Monmouthshire and in doing so, he beat 130 other combinations.

With just the two qualification spots available for the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship Final, which will be held during this October’s Horse of the Year Show, all of the starters were focused on finishing inside the top two.

The first two rounds of the class were fiercely contested and just thirteen remained in the running by the time the final jump off rolled round. Ten combinations elected to compete in that final round and six treble clears were eventually produced.

Jake, from Newark, Nottinghamshire, set the standard early on in the jump off after producing a treble clear in 39.83 seconds on board his own 6 year-old bay gelding Fantastico C, a result which could not be beaten. Jake and Fantastico C were the only pair to clock up their treble clear in less than 40.00 seconds.

Second place was taken by Laura Pritchard from Holyhead, Gwynedd and she picked up her Horse of the Year Show place on Tracy Pritchard’s 6 year-old bay stallion Horse Victorys Fayot. The pair delivered their treble clear in 40.21 seconds.

With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show, the riders and horses that finished in third to sixth missed out on Championship qualification this time around. They did however take home the chance to compete in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
