Twenty-two combinations share the honours in the Prestige Italia Big Star Championship Qualifier at Wales and West Shows

The Big Star Championship, formerly known as the National Six Year Old Championship, was renamed in 2017 in honour of Big Star, a previous winner of the National Six Year Old Championship who went on to win the Individual Gold medal at Rio 2016. This year the championship has welcomed Prestige Italia as the new title sponsor and the qualifiers for the 2019 Prestige Italia Big Star Championship got underway this weekend at the Wales and West Showground in Crick, Monmouthshire. The qualifier was held during the Welsh Masters Show.
Results are based on clear rounds and the competing combinations do not jump against the clock, therefore all riders were aiming to achieve a treble clear to ensure a qualifying place for the Prestige Italia Big Star Championship Final which will be held during the British Showjumping National Championships at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire (6th – 11th August 2019).
Wales and West Showground proved to be a popular venue for the first of the four Championship Qualifiers with eighty combinations coming forward to take on course designer Ian Clarke’s eleven fence track with a starting height of 1.20m. Fifty-seven of the initial starters progressed onto the second round with thirty-seven going through to the all-important third round. Twenty-two were able to produce a treble clear to secure their qualifying place.
Pippa Funnell takes through three British-bred rides with Billy Sarafina, Billy Marmite and Billy Chill whilst husband William and Luke Hill take through the fourth and fifth Billy Stud horses with Billy Pablo and Billy York respectively. Michael Fursedonn was another to take through multiple rides, he piloted Ilsterov and Newton III to qualification.
