Keysoe International CSI** - Day Three

Thursday 07 July 2016

Repeating his Allington Arena UK CSI** win, British-based Irishman Michael Duffy outpaced all his British rivals to take the Keysoe International Grand Prix in fine style on Belcanto Z.

Only seven from forty-five starters contended the jump-off, with the speedy Michael taking the win by 1.29 seconds on Alan Burnell’s Belcanto. Michael, 21, has only ridden the Berlin x Mr Blue 10-year-old since the beginning of June, but they have quickly established a firm partnership.

A double winner yesterday, newly-married Holly Smith (nee Gillott) took second with the Irish-bred 8-year-old Lammy Beach, and Chloe Winchester eased Synique, a Sydney/Guidam 11-year-old mare, into third.

Jake Saywell chased Michael hard on Grand Cru Van Paemel, and would have won by 1.15 seconds, but a pole on the floor put paid to their chances and dropped them to fifth.

Chelsea Skelton enjoyed a great show, rounding off her first day double with a win in the concluding 1.35m speed on Judith Witham’s 10-year-old Balou Du Rouet gelding Millfield Baloney. She claimed victory with 0.67 of a second to spare over second-placed Jay Halim on the 11-year-old Unistar gelding Abrisco. Simon Crippen netted third on Atlanta VIII, an 11-year-old Pennsylvania daughter.

Children-on-horses rider Lily Freeman-Attwood headed the 1.25m with the 9-year-old mare Topspin, taking the class by 0.17 of a second. A large field of seventy-four started with thirty-three providing round one clears and thirteen posting double clears.

Nick Benterman claimed second on the Andiamo 11-year-old Adico and Harrison Hatteea was third aboard the Mr Darcy x Carnaval Drum 11-year-old Darko Supreme.

Tara McDonald claimed the 6-year-old final with Fygo Von D’Ouwe Grint, winning by 0.46 seconds. The Indoctro x Pierrot gelding, who will contend the SEIB Winter Novice Championship at the Royal International Horse Show later this month, gained valuable experience on the Spanish sunshine tour earlier this year.

Only six from twenty-five reached the jump-off.  Russia’s Anastasia Gamazova took second on Faith III with Jake Saywell just one hundredth of a second behind them for third on the eye-catching stallion Quimari W.

Rachel Burr topped the 5-year-old final on the Ukato x Goodtimes gelding Gaudi with a 0.19 of a second margin. Daniel Moseley took second with John Hales’ Berdenn De Kergane, a stallion by Quaprice Boimargot Quincy and out of a Flipper D’Elle mare.  Nicole Pavitt took third on Newtonhill Monaco, a stallion with Arko x Corrado II bloodlines.

Rachel Horton is in flying form. She took the top two places in Wednesday’s 1.15m on Carnavel De La Ferme Blanche and Quidelle Du Reverdy, and repeated the win with Quidelle in the final 1.15m. They won by the slenderest of margins, just 0.06 of a second ahead of the formidable partnership of Helen Rees and the 14-year-old gelding Maximo Des Forests. Chelsea Skelton was third on Cheleko GB Z – Tuesday’s 1.10m winner.
