Charles Britton Equestrian Construction Winter JA Classic Final
Monday 03 July 2017
Lily Freeman-Attwood provided the sole double clear on Valmy De Treille to secure the Charles Britton Equestrian Construction Winter JA Classic title in a tense competition.
Eighteen of the top pony riders contended course-designer Mark McGowan’s 12-fence track, but it wasn’t until the eighth draw a clear was realised, but an eventual six posted clean rounds for an exciting jump-off.
The pressure was on not only to produce a clear round, but also to lift this prestigious title. Faye Sutton was unlucky to roll a pole on Robe Ruadh, but Lily followed with a foot-perfect round on the bay mare Valmy, owned by Emily Freeman-Attwood, to claim the lead.
“I knew there weren’t any clears so I didn’t go too fast but I had to take a risk – luckily she is naturally quick across the ground so I don’t have to worry too much,” said Lily, who followed trainer Mark McCourt’s instructions to “go clear but keep tight lines.”
Fraser Reed immediately beat the time by 0.43 seconds on the 14 year-old bay gelding Kilcoghan DG Clover owned by Graham Heath but lowered a pole – Lily could breathe again.
Last to go Antonia Platt opted for accuracy and left every fence intact on Rosalind Platt's 11 year-old bay gelding Carnhill Luna, but their steady round paid the penalty with three time faults, although it still proved sufficient for second place, pushing Fraser into third.
Lily’s win is all the more significant as the Kantjes Ronaldo daughter Valmy is only an 8 year-old bought in France in February.
“She was only jumping 1.20m classes and has stepped up very well, nothing fazes her. We only jumped the JA qualifiers at Arena UK and Bury Farm and qualified at the last one,” said Lily, who is also through to Horse of the Year Show.
“We qualified here at South View, she likes it here.”
Tahnia Jordan Jones was on form on the first two days, taking the initial 148cm speed challenge and heading the 148cm European trial 24 hours later with the 11-year-old grey gelding Jumper.
