The 2009 Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) opened the doors of the new LG Arena at Birmingham’s NEC yesterday, with a feast of equestrian entertainment. The Show will continue all week, culminating in a star studded celebrity Gala night this Sunday.
The BSJA Amateur Classic Championship was a win for Ian Wynne from Llangollen in Clwyd. Riding Ann Wolley Dod’s nine year-old British bred dark bay gelding Don Douglas, the combination jumped the fastest of four double clears to take the victory from Emma Slater riding William Howse’s Lowmoor Darwin. Ami Measor finished in third place riding Jane Dexter’s Belle Fleur.

In form Pippa Allen, 16, from Stockton-on-Tees in Cleveland took the Squibb Demolition National Pony Foxhunter Championship aboard Duncan Inglis’ eight year-old bay mare Wicked II. Jumping just one of two double clears of the competion, Pippa snatched the title from runner-up Natasha Dean with Sequoia True Legacy with Georgie Roadnight and Herbies Double Trouble in third with the fastest four faults in the jump off.

Nineteen year-old Matthew Sampson from Sheffield, South Yorkshire riding his own seven year-old bay gelding V. Anubertha 59 won the Tri-Zone Senior Newcomers Championship in fine style. Producing the fastest of three double clears, Matthew took the title from
Ireland’s Antony Condon with Billy Twomey’s Adelgonde-Z by turning corners so tightly that spectators were on the edge of the seats as he turned to the final line. Third place went to Julie Andrews riding Emma Armstrong’s Oslo du Pre Fleuri.

A double clear in a time of 37.76 seconds put them ahead of Daniel Neilson and Lynsey Cook’s eight year-old grey mare Iolanthe with Julie Andrews riding Emelie Marsh’s Canora into third spot.
