Laura Renwick Dominates in the Redpost Equestrian Senior Foxhunter Second Round at Felbridge Showground

The Redpost Equestrian Foxhunter Seconds Rounds continued this week at Felbridge Showground with Laura Renwick dominating to take home first and third place.

Sixty-two combinations came forward over Ben Townley’s 1.30m track, with the field reduced to eight for the final jump-off. Five riders jumped the all-important triple clear to battle for a ticket to the prestigious final at The Horse of the Year Show.

Drawn second to go with her own NFS Top Gun, Laura knew it would be a case of who dares wins and set off at pace around the course to ensure she would be the target to beat. Crossing the finish line in a time of 37.76 seconds, Laura’s time would prove to be uncatchable and secured her a well-deserved victory.

Three to go from the end, Laura then rode her other ride, Top Star C, straight to second place and it looked like nobody would be able to match her time until last to go, Joe Clayton entered the arena with Abi Cullum’s Expenditure. Despite only taking on the ride a few months ago, Joe trusted the gelding to leave the poles up as the pair chased down Laura’s time, eventually slotting into second place and taking home the other ticket to the final.

Commenting on her win, Laura said: “This was our second attempt at a qualifier, we just had a pole in the third round at Vale View the week before, but I was so confident in his ability. He’s a super horse, has such a good attitude and is on good form at the moment. He just really wants to go out there and get the job done.

“There was a strong field, and it was a technical track, although there were more clears than I thought there would be, but I was hopeful that we could get the qualification. We were early to go in the final round so I just went for it. He doesn’t feel that fast but he covers the ground well so I know we would be there or there abouts to put the pressure on everyone else. I was gutted that Joe managed to slide into second or I could have had two qualify, which would have been amazing!

Known as Eric at home, Laura commented on how important this win was: “It’s so special to do it on a homebred. I rode both his mum and dad so as breeders it just makes everything worthwhile. He’s just such a special horse and I’m really looking forward to going to the Foxhunter Final again. It’s been a long while since I contended one but hopefully, I can get another title.”

In the Senior Newcomers Second Round, Pippa Goddard proved best of 99 starters when she piloted Jessica Williams’ PDV Constanza across the finish in a time of 32.53 seconds to take the win, almost 3 seconds ahead of second place. Lucy Townley slotted the Billy Stud’s Billy On My Mind into second place whilst Lottie Tutt rode another Billy Stud owned horse, Billy Be Magical, into third place just 0.19 further off the pace.
