NIGEL COUPE BRINGS FESTIVAL TO SPECTACULAR CLOSE

Alexanders Horseboxes British Showjumping Scope Festival - Saturday 31st August 2013

Nigel Coupe and Golvers Hill captured the British Showjumping Arcflex National Championship to draw 2013’s spectacular Festival drew to a close.

Course-designer Peter Gillespie’s testing track drew 16 clears, but these were dramatically reduced as the raised fences for the second round – some now topping the wings – fell with the lightest of taps.

Four eventually reached the jump-off, with Gents winner Robert Bevis setting a quick target on the scopey Courtney 6.  But Nigel found a quicker route on Sue Simmons’ Golvers Hill, and the pair flashed through the finish with a sec in hand.

“He’s careful with plenty of scope” said Nigel on the 10-year-old by Ricardo Z.

Tim Page with Sue Hodgson’s big grey Santa Cruise and Graham Lovegrove on Alfie 192 challenged from the latter half of the jump-off, but both lowered a pole in the double and neither matched the time.

Emily Ward, 14, rounded off her fabulous week of victories with the feature Alexander Horseboxes Dunglenn 148cm championship on Wizard VIII.

There were just four clears that came forward to the jump-off, with Emily’s final round clinching the title on the unusually coloured roan mare.

“I feel so confident on her and she trusts me” said Emily, who had enjoyed a terrific show.

The Wirral-based rider had clocked up four championship wins.  Top pony ride King Mac started the ball rolling with a win in the Jubilee Open Pony Championship, Shannon Bay Extra topped the pony adventurer and Wild Rose claimed the under 18 title.

Alex Gill rode Ammanvalley Santino into second, with Jodie Hall-McAteer and Tixylix in third.

Anthony Condon claimed the British Showjumping Partnership National six-year-old title with Kat Taylor’s Dutch-bred Cold Case.

“He tries his heart out and he’s an absolute pleasure in every way” said Anthony on the bay gelding by Canturo and out of a Nabab De Reve mare.

Only three reached the final stages – all having jumped clear rounds throughout the week – with Dale Burnham and the British-bred Romanella Gold, a son of Romanov, posting four faults in the opening round.

Anthony proved foot-perfect on Cold Case, and despite a serious challenge from Phillip Miller and the German-bred Indecision, they remained ahead to take the title by 0.47sec.

“The new format is brilliant – the most consistent horse wins at the end of the day” said Anthony.

Locally-based Emma Sargeant, already with three wins to her credit, gained the Autostop Adventurer championship with Kelly Hall’s homebred Dundees Lady.

The seven-year-old High Offley Crocodile Dundee daughter is shared between owner Kelly and Emma.

“I ride her once a week and at a show” said Emma, who won the four-year-old (Cyloma Z), the 1.15m with Fools Business, who also won the Cats and Pipes Pairs Challenge when paired with Graham Gillespie on GIG Rockim.

Jake Saywell took the Horsesolarium.co.uk Grade B title on his grandmother Rachel Gascoine’s Special K IV with the only double clear in a head-to-head with Bryony Ward’s Midnight Man II.

“I felt more pressure going last and having to jump clear than I would in a jump-off of 10 horses” said Jake 16, who had aimed this eight-year-old by Kannan solely at this class.

The partnership posted a double clear in the Junior Nations Cup at Deauville for the British team in July.

“He’s stepped up this year and will step up again in 2014” said Jake.

Matt Edwards marked his first Festival visit with a championship win in the Tacklockers.com Pony British Novice on Arrow Head Quiver.

“He looked after me in the jump-off, but almost jumped me off at the planks” said Shrewsbury based Matt, 13, a David Davies Pony Club member.

Matt has ridden the 138cm dun gelding for a year.

“We clicked straightaway and won our first four classes” he said.

Amelia Drake’s storming round landed the RSP Legal Costing Tiny Tots with the speedy Nat’s Lass.

“She’s so fast and I’d got my route planned” said Amelia, 9, whose family has owned this grey mare for three years, and allowed Megan Taylor to ride her in 2011 to win this title.

The Suffolk Saints topped the British Showjumping National Teams in a jump-off with Star Bucks finishing narrowly in second.
