With 11 riders forward, it was Sophia Cuthbert who was announced as the first winner of the day here at the British Showjumping National Championships. Riding her 13 year old mare Walty L, Sophia and ‘Elle’ produced a superb and careful round to finish in a time of 35.79 seconds.
The Stockton-on-Tees showjumper returned to riding four years ago following a bad riding accident which had dented her confidence and stopped her from being able to enjoy the sport she once loved. Dressage trainer Ian Brown came across Elle, the delightful bay mare and knew she would be the horse to give Sophia back her confidence. The talented combination have been training hard to achieve success in the NAF Five Star Programme and are delighted to have made it to the Championships, let alone win.
“Elle is such a patient mare and she has really helped me to get back in the saddle and to get out there enjoying myself again. She has taught children to ride as well as teaching me to trust a horse again and I’m so grateful that Ian found her. I’m so pleased to be at the championships competing again,” explained Sophia. With her confidence regained there’s now no stopping Sophia as later on today she tackles the 1.20m National Senior Rider Championship.
