Busy weekend for Pony, Children and Junior teams in Wierden

Sunday 07 June 2015

It was a busy weekend for the Pony, Children and Junior teams whom had headed out to the Wierden in The Netherlands to contest their respective Nations Cups at the  Outdoor Wierden & Dutch Youngster Festival.

Pony Team and Grand Prix
The Pony Nations Cup was the first team competition fought and took place on Friday afternoon.  For Great Britain, under the guidance of Pony Chef d’Equipe Matt Lanni,  it was a 7th place finish on their first round score of  19 penalties with Germany taking the honours .

Unfortunately, despite 16 year-old Charlie Dawson from Goole and Claggan Gipsy Delight along with 15 year-old Jody Hall MacAteer  from Borehamwood and Tixylix jumping for 4 penalties each they didn’t make it through to the second cut as it was only the top six nations after the first round that were invited to jump again.  An unfortunate elimination for 14 year-old Georgia Blakemore from Lytham St Annes and Toy Story III meant the 11 penalties that had been awarded to 14 year-old Drew Walton from Preston and Tequila Twist needed to be carried, in a team competition where one of the four scores can be dropped, which put GB just outside the top six.

The Pony Grand Prix which took place this morning saw 13 year-old squad member Jack Whitaker with his father Michael’s pony Zodianne Van de Doevenbree  finish the highest placed Brit in 5th place.  Jumping one of the only  eleven clears achieved in the first round, from a field that numbered in excess of sixty starters, he went on to jump another clear in a time of 41.56 seconds.  It was Germany’s Enno Klaphake with Nikilina who won the class having put in an incredibly fast time to stop the lock in 36.74 seconds.

Children Nations Cup and Grand Prix
The Children’s Nations Cup took place later on the Friday with Chef d’Equipe Alan Fazakerly at the helm.  A brilliant performance by 14 year-old  India Bussey from Norwich and  Josephine Gates chestnut gelding Westwinds Ego saw them produce a superb double clear in their role of trailblazer for the team.  A time fault for 14 year-old  Lottie Tutt from Aylesbury and Alan Tredwell’s chestnut gelding Babylon saw a time penalty accrued but it was an unfortunate 9 penalties that they picked up in round two.  Bobbie Heath aged 13 from Nantwich and her father Graham’s chestnut mare  Labouleska jumped clear in round one but stopping the clock outside the time allowed saw two time penalties picked up, the same as they did in round two in addition to 4 penalties when a fence fell.  Last to go Jack Whitaker with  Joe Clayton’s bay gelding Saveur became the dropscore in round one with their 5 penalty finish but jumped a foot perfect clear in round two to give Great Britain a joint 5th place finish with Belgium.  Once again it was Germany who dominated at Wierden finishing on a zero penalty score with Italy taking 2nd one jump behind on 4 penalties.

The Grand Prix saw Individual pony rider Jack Whitaker mirror his earlier performance by being the highest placed Brit.  It was a total of forty eight starters that came forward with sixteen of them jumping clear.  In an extremely hard fought jump off, it was seven that managed to return another clear with all of them putting their foot no the accelerator and cutting corners wherever they could.  It was Milla Polizzi for Italy an Lapsus that took the eventual honours stopping the clock in 34.08 seconds.  Incredibly it was less than three seconds the separated the top six placings which serves to illustrate how hard the battle for the podium position was. For Great Britain, it was a real success as the union flag saddle clothes made up half of the top six placings with Individual riders Hallie Lunn, aged 14 from Rochford and her father Richard’s chestnut mare Brookwood Supersonic sitting in 4th place and 12 year-old  Sienna Charles from Alton and Oakingham Stud’s 16 dark bay mare El Sueno’s Night Fever taking 6th.

Junior Nations Cup and Grand Prix
Saturday saw the turn of the Juniors with their Nations Cup taking place in the afternoon.  With all four riders posting extremely solid performances we finished in joint 2nd with the Netherlands one fence behind Germany whom had made it a hat-trick by winning all three team competitions.

Harry Charles aged 15 from Alton (Hampshire) rode as pathfinder and jumped a brilliant clear in each round with Dominique Masson’s chestnut gelding Vivaldi du Dom.  Carmen Edwards aged 18 from Ellesmere and Zarissa along with Faye Adams and her mother Julie’s chestnut gelding Zozo CL each jumped for 4 penalties in both rounds.  Robert Murphy aged 14 from Preston and Catherine Witt’s bay gelding Del Fuego jumped clear in the first round but retired in the second when it became clear that we couldn’t beat the German team.

All Grand Prix classes had seen big fields come forward and the Junior one was no exception to this with just short of seventy combinations taking on the course.  It was Liechtenstein rider Vanessa-Joy Nagle and Energie des Tois Bouleaux that took the honours by jumping the fastest double clear in a time of 36.07 seconds.  Ten competitions had managed to achieve a clear in the first round but it was only five that managed to repeat the performance in the jump off.  Kelly Jochems for the Netherlands took 2nd place with GBR rider Harry Charles and Vivaldi du Dom taking 3rd place and keeping Great Britain high up in the line-up.
