Yesterday saw Lily Dean and Mister Seamus build on an already successful second round campaign after they took the win in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round held during the Pony Premier Show at Arena UK in Grantham, Lincolnshire. This combination also has a win in a Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Second Round under their belt from earlier on in the month.
With just two direct qualifying places available for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, each rider was focused on producing a treble clear as they knew that this would give them the best chance of taking one of the coveted qualification spots as their very own. Lily and Mister Seamus managed to beat the other eighty-four combinations that came forward to contest the class.
The final jump off proved to be exciting with treble clears coming thick and fast from the competitors and from the eleven remaining combinations, nine treble clears in total were delivered.
A lightening quick round from Lily Dean, aged 14, from Malvern, Worcestershire on her mother Rose’s 14 year-old bay gelding Mister Seamus saw the combination cross the finish line with the fastest treble clear of the class. Drawn as the penultimate rider to go in the jump off, Lily had the advantage of seeing most of the other competitor’s performances, which meant that she knew that a fast clear would put her in contention. Lily produced a third and final foot perfect round in 39.25 seconds and this was to give her a 2 second advantage.
Laura Charley, aged 15 from Fillongley, Coventry secured her place inside the top two on board Stephanie Charley’s 7 year-old skewbald mare Popies Pop Star. This combination produced their treble clear in 41.22 seconds.
With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, the riders and ponies that finished in third to ninth missed out on their Championship qualification this time around. However, they did take home the chance to compete in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
