Arena UK in Grantham, Lincolnshire held their Pony Premier Show over the weekend and a key part of the show was the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Second Round held on Saturday.
Each of the thirty-eight starting combinations came forward with the hope of picking up one of the three direct qualifying places on offer for the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show. Nine combinations produced two foot perfect rounds to go forward into the final jump off and five went on to produce an all-important third clear round. With just the three Championship Final spots available, the allocation of those places came down to the ever crucial clock.
The top spot in this second round was taken by 15 year-old Tabitha Dean from Hook, Hampshire on her mother Sam’s 8 year-old grey mare Atlantic Hope II. They were drawn as the seventh combination to go in the nine horse jump off and they produced their third and final foot perfect round in 35.74 seconds to ensure that they could not be beaten.
Laura Charley, aged 15 from Fillongley, Coventry took second place after producing her treble clear with Stephanie Charley’s 9 year-old chestnut gelding Blackstown Spot On. This pairing produced the second treble clear of the class after being drawn as one of the early combinations in the jump off and they jumped their third clear in 38.64 seconds.
Taking the third and final Championship Final qualification place was Millie Dickinson, aged 16 from Harpenden, Hertfordshire on her mother Jan’s 9 year-old chestnut gelding Ron Burgundy. This combination produced their final clear round in a time of 39.80 seconds.
With the three direct qualifying tickets for the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show having already been secured, the combinations in fourth and fifth took home the chance to compete in the Squibb Group Pony Foxhunter Masters at the forthcoming British Showjumping National Championships.
