The biggest agricultural event in the county, Devon County Show returns 16-18th May.

The Devon County Show running 16-18th May, the biggest agricultural event in the county, with its dazzling line up of features and attractions, is very nearly upon us.

The equestrian events are always a firm favourite on the showground, and there are over 1,100 horses and riders currently preparing to compete in over 190 classes, including the ever-exciting show jumping competitions which this year have attracted large entries. The International Stairway and the Area Trial both see strong fields entered with some of the best riders on the National circuit travelling to compete, including Mark Edwards who will surely be looking to retain his crown in both classes.

But it’s not just in the competition arena that horses will be making make an appearance.  Look out for several other ‘must-sees’ for equine enthusiasts including this year’s headline act, Ben Atkinson and his troupe of action horses.

Ben’s horses are celebrities in their own right, having appeared in a number of films and TV series, including Poldark and even a Bollywood blockbuster.

Rider and troupe leader Ben Atkinson has been performing with horses since the tender age of 11, when he made his first display of Roman riding. Since then, Ben has gone on to build his own show team of riders who star at events all over the world.  The act prepared for Devon County Show promises to push the boundaries of the connection between horse and rider, as they work in seamless harmony, showcasing some of the most advanced equestrian techniques in power and grace including Liberty, Classical Dressage, Airs Above the Ground and Cossack Trick Riding.

For those who weren’t lucky enough to catch the magnificent heavy horse display at last year’s Devon County Show, you have a second chance.  The Festival of Heavy Horses is to make a very welcome return in 2024.

This year’s Festival will feature several of these huge gentle giants, representing different breeds including Shires, Clydesdales, Suffolks, Percherons and Canadian Belgians - the world’s largest breed of draught horse that can stand up to a magnificent 20hh.

The Main Arena will spotlight the breeds’ expertise across a range of disciplines over the three days of the show.  These will include the pulling of drays, agricultural carts and ladies’ carts.

Don’t miss it!
