Brilliant Brash lands the CPKC International Grand Prix presented by Rolex to crown a fantastic week for the Brits at the Spruce Meadows Masters

It was a record-breaking week for the Brits at the 50th Anniversary of the Spruce Meadows Masters and, after Britain’s Team Audevard won the Nations’ Cup after a 29-year hiatus, Scott Brash crowned the week with a glorious victory in the $5million CPKC International 1.60m Grand Prix presented by Rolex.  The win marked 10 years to the day Scott won the Rolex Grand Slam with Hello Sanctos.

On this occasion, he rode Hello Jefferson into victory in top single-event purse in Canada this year, taking home one third of the $5million total prize pot.  He also carried out the wishes of the visiting Duchess of Edinburgh, who praised the British athletes on their success – “My fondest wish today is that a British rider wins again.”

Renowned course designer Leopoldo Palacios (VEN) set a 13-fence, 17-effort track, including not one but two open water elements, with his trademark tight time for the 36 riders who came forward in the spacious and immaculate International Arena.  Twelve were scripted to return for round two, the 11 clears joined by one carrying one time fault going in reverse order of merit.

They faced a tough round two; 12-fences and 15 jumping efforts.  No clear rounds were produced, but two were left on four faults for a jump-off – Scott and the eager Hello Jefferson pitted against The USA’s Kyle King on Kayenne Z.

Scott was first out with Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham’s Hello Jefferson (Cooper Van De Heffinck x Irco Mena) and the 16-year-old belied his years to skip round clear and quick, putting the pressure on Kyle King.  Kyle got the time by 0.86 seconds, but Kayenne Z fell foul of the Canada plank to come home on four faults for second place, handing Scott the win.

“Me winning ten years ago, it was just. Yeah, incredible. You can’t really write it.  The venue seems to get better every year.  And, what a fantastic place to be able to showcase the top end of the sport,” said Scott, reminiscing about his Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping victory 10 years ago and now winning again on the 50th Anniversary of Spruce Meadows.

As the new Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping live contender, Scott will have the opportunity to continue his journey at CHI Geneva this December.  Is another Grand Slam in the making?

Joseph Stockdale also smashed records with victory in the Atco Electric Six-Bar with the 11-year-old It’s Confidential (Conthargos x Cardento 933).

Twelve originally turned out for the six vertical test over ascending height in each round, and only three qualified for the final round.  Germany’s Daniel Deusser opted to withdraw at this point, Joseph lining up head-to-head with Czech’s Vaclav Stanek on Quintin for the final showdown.

The record set by Jessica Kurten in 2004 was broken as both Vlaclav and Joseph cleared the final vertical at 2.13m, handing Joseph a shared victory of the class his late father Tim won back in 2011.

“Breaking the Six-Bar record at Spruce Meadows and winning the same class as my Dad did the last time I was here in Calgary is one I won’t forget – a very special night,” said Joseph, following the emotional win.

Charlie Jones held his own in the 1.45m classes with Capitale 6, finishing second in the five-horse decider of the Paramount Resources Cup 0.31 seconds adrift of the winning time, before going on to take the 2* Grand Prix.

Twenty-two riders initially contended the Friends of the Meadows Grand Prix, with seven returning for the jump-off.  Charlie and the San Patrignano Cassini For Pleasure 14-year-old were far too quick for the rest, galloping to the top of the podium with more than three seconds to spare.

Robert Murphy claims a win at Azelhof Jumping

Robert Murphy was on form with Hulde G at Azelhof Jumping in Belgium.

The pair kicked off their campaign with a win on day one, forging ahead in the 56-horse 3* 1.45m speed to win by 0.25 seconds.

They returned in the feature world ranking 3* 1.50m Grand Prix to narrowly finish second.  Fifty-nine riders tackled course-designer Henk Linders’ 13-fence, 16-effort 1.50m track with 15 returning for the jump-off under the 25% rule, 11 clears joined by those carrying their faults.

Justifiably, six double clears filled the top places, robert and Jos Lansink Horses BV’s Vigo D’Arsouilles x Warrant 13-year-old breaking the finish beams only 0.28 seconds behind the winner, The Netherlands’ Leopold van Asten and VDL Groep Nino Du Roton.

Sandy McLean was in the money, winning an early 3* 1.40m two-phase with Johnnie Walker beating their 49 rivals by half a second.  Johnnie Walker also picked up second in the final 80-strong 3* 1.40m speed for Sandy, the Zapatero x Mermus R 11-year-old 1.29 seconds behind the pace for the runner-up spot.

Kolwa jumped into second place in Saturday’s big 95-entry world ranking 3* 1.45m for Sandy.  Only 14 qualified for the jump-off, Sandy and the Connect x Lord Z 10-year-old finishing 0.38 seconds off the winning time.

Sandy picked up a win in the concluding 36-horse Five and Six-year-old 1.15/1.25m speed on the Chacoon Blue six-year-old Chanaiko PS with 0.85 seconds in hand.

John Whitaker also scored a win, speeding ahead in the 3* 1.35m speed on the nine-year-old Lingote Du Oro (Kannan x Heartbreaker) to beat his 43 rivals by one whole second.

Chad Fellows jumps to a win in Peelbergen

Chad Fellows secured victory in the 2* Medium Tour Final on the final day at Peelbergen in The Netherlands, with NPS Klooney.

Fifty-two competitors came forward over the 13-fence 1.45m course with eight gaining access to the jump-off.  Chad smoothly found the shortest route, easing the NPS Super Nova x Toulon eight-year-old into a 0.91 second win.

Chloe Winchester scored a double with Chakensa PS, the nine-year-old Chacoon Blue daughter heading an early 82-strong 1* 1.30m two-phase with 0.66 seconds to spare and topping the 1* 1.35m Final six-horse jump-off by 0.69 seconds.
