Friday 06 August 2021
Today the greatly anticipated first leg of the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) league took place at the British Showjumping National Championships at the NAEC in Stoneleigh with some tough competition played out. The audience were expecting to see some exciting top class competition and the class did not disappoint.
The first of three legs with league points awarded across each, with the National SpeedHorse Final taking place tomorrow before concluding on Sunday with the International Stairway Final. The recipients of the four invites in total being awarded at the show will then automatically be eligible for the International Competitions at Horse of the Year Show 2021 (6th – 10th October) where the qualified rider will be entitled to enter three horses plus one for the Ripon Select Foods Puissance.
In a huge class of seventy-three combinations it was Joe Trunkfield and the 8-year-old Idwerd that flew to victory by being the fastest of the seven double clears achieved. Commenting on his win he said “My original plan was to just beat the fences, but Woody [Idwerd] is naturally quick and a brave horse, which was enough to win.”
Jack Whitaker and Elucar V E were only 0.5s behind Joe, taking second place, with Joseph Fernyhough and Calcourt Particle taking third.
