Sienna Hutchings and Mia Pearson Soar to Success in the STX-UK Pony British Novice Second Rounds

This past weekend showcased the first two STX-UK Pony British Novice Second Round, with young riders vying for qualification to the Final at the British Showjumping National Championships.

The competition kicked off at Dorset Showground where 27 riders battled it out for top honours. Credit to the talent on display, 18 combinations advanced to the jump-off with 12 jumping treble clear, but it was Sienna Hutchings, riding Crystal Hutching’s 18-year-old Carless Neopolitan, who emerged victorious. The duo delivered three clear rounds in a rapid time of 26.42 seconds and could not be beaten.

Frankie Dury picked up second place with Jo Dury’s Deelish Lilly, 1.71 seconds in arrears, whilst Bonnie Evans rode Greg Evans’ Ruby Tuesday XIV into third place, a further 0.89 seconds off the pace.

In the Pony Discovery Second Round, Sophia Parry jumped two speedy triple clears to take home first and third place with Sarah Roberts’ Ally 11 and Lynsey Brotherton’s Brondinas Quattro Turbo. Genevieve Johnson was sandwiched into second place with Chandra Johnson’s Fernhill Mix & Match.

The excitement continued at Forest Edge Arena in the Pony Discovery Second Rounds where Mia Pearson and Kono IV, a seven-year-old mare owned by Victoria Pearson, delivered the only treble clear of the class to take top spot against their 17 rivals. Sienna Shrubb, riding Tarkasbrook Stud’s Tarkasbrook Bright Star, produced the fastest round of the class but an unfortunate four faults relegated them into second place. Savannah Hibbs with Hannah Hibbs’ Macs Black Diamond picked up third as the fastest four fault round in round two.

“It was a very nice course I thought, technical but not too much. I thought she jumped amazing especially as it’s our first attempt at second round classes and she is still young, but I was really excited to win,” said an excited Mia. “I’m really looking forward to going to the final as it will be my first time going there and I hope to be able to qualify for HOYS in the future too.”

“We bought the pony from PK Ponies who has been so supportive and Mia trains with Jade Gerken who is a phenomenal trainer,” added Mia’s mum, Victoria. She is so understanding and encouraging and always there if we need advice, either at the show or on the end of the phone.

“It [Forest Edge] was a great venue to go to for their first Second Round attempt. They were so welcoming, and the judges were so helpful when we had questions. It had a good mix of technicality and progression that was balanced but not overwhelming for the riders and I think has really helped prepare us for this journey.”

In the Pony Discovery Second Round, Lola Price outpaced her rivals with the seven-year-old gelding Covau, owned by Danielle Featherstone-Price, finishing in a time of 35.56 seconds. Abi Kerry slotted into second place with Adam Kerry’s Cois Na Habhainn Little Bobby, 3.54 seconds off the winning pace and Gracie Dwyer took home third with Dawn Dwyer’s Whitethorn Dusky Star, jumping the fastest four fault round in the jump-off.

The Pony Discovery Second Rounds kicked off at Reaseheath College on the 19 April where Ryder Clarke took the top honours with Kelly Clarke’s Machno High Flyer, in 37.59 seconds. Kelsey Clark slotted into second place with Diamonty II, owned by Jayne Clark, less than a second behind the winning combination. Gracie Maw produced the quickest round of the class, finishing in 33.31 seconds, but an unfortunate pole at the fifth fence saw them relegated to third place.
