Darcie Leaning and Haremeare Swagman Secure Their National Championships Ticket at Forest Edge Arena

The STX-UK Pony British Novice Second Round at Forest Edge Arena on Monday saw riders battle it out for their coveted qualification spot for the British Showjumping National Championships this August. 

Susan Peasley’s course proved a true test for the combinations forward, with riders needing accuracy, rhythm and determination to secure a place in the jump-off. After an exciting opening two rounds, it was two combinations who managed to keep all the poles intact and progress through to the deciding jump-off phase. 

Taking the win was Darcie Leaning aboard Jackie Cooper’s Haremeare Swagman, who produced a fantastic clear round in a speedy time of 35.20 seconds to take top honours and book their place at the Championships. 

Second place went to Lucy Bennison riding Buddy Elf, who also delivered a superb double clear performance. Stopping the clock in 36.48 seconds, they finished just behind the winners after another impressive jump-off round. 

“Darcie has had the pony for just over a year, Bruce is only six and has been a difficult ride up till now. Darcie absolutely loves him, I offered to move him on when we were struggling but she wanted to make it work with him and now they have finally clicked. Darcie is my god daughter, she isn’t from a horsey background, I taught her to ride over the last six years and now riding is her main interest. 

“Forest Edge was one of the first places we went to doing BS and it’s turned into Darcies favourite place to go, especially now she has won there. Darcie likes to go there for long weekends, a bit like a little holiday with her pony. We are quite new to BS and didn’t realise it was three rounds at first but the courses on both days were all really good for us. 

“We are just taking it steady this year with Bruce as Darcie is coming up to her GCSE’s and we are in no rush with the pony. Bruce is a real character, it’s been a learning curve with him for Darcie, but it’s made her a good rider.  We did the Bronze League with a different pony last year, it’s a good show and we are looking forward to going again.” Said Jackie, Darcie’s God Mother.
