Jessica Upton and Lakeview Last Leaf Secure Discovery Success at Parwood

The Nupafeed Supplements Senior Discovery – Second Round at Parwood Equestrian Centre proved to be a competitive affair at the weekend, as 20 rider combinations came forward to tackle John Farrell’s testing track.
With valuable qualification places on offer, riders were required to deliver precision and consistency across the opening two rounds. Farrell’s course asked plenty of questions throughout, and only five combinations managed to produce those all-important double clears to secure their place in the jump-off.
Rising to the challenge in style was Jessica Upton aboard Laura Upton’s talented mare Lakeview Last Leaf. Producing a confident and fluent round against the clock, the pair stopped the timers in an impressive 35.32 seconds to take victory and secure their ticket forward.
Second place went the way of Annie Russell Norton riding Chaccolicious. The pair delivered another polished clear round in the jump-off, crossing the line in 45.01 seconds to claim the runner-up position.
Completing the top three was Jasmin Dawson with Kiss the Girl, who also maintained a faultless record in the final phase, finishing clear in a time of 46.37 seconds.
“We got Hallie when she was nearly four, and I was 11, she’s nine now, so we’ve had her a while, but this is her year of proper jumping. She’s only about 15.1hh, we were hoping she would grow to be a bit bigger. It’s been difficult finding out how she likes to go and be managed to keep her happy, she likes to live out 24/7, and she likes things done her own way, we have discovered, which is why it's taken a while to get her established. I feel like we have really got the hang of her now; she’s not the easiest. She’s actually a real winner. I’ve been having some lessons with John Renwick with her, which has really helped.
“I have jumped in the Nupafeed Discovery and 1.15m Members Cup Final before with her father, and I have already qualified a different horse, but it’s the first thing Hallie has qualified for. We have only been to Parwood a couple of times as it’s a long way but it’s a nice show. The course suited Hallie and we were last to go but I didn’t get to watch the jump off, we had a young horse back at the lorry, which wasn’t settled. I had no idea what the fastest time was! So, I thought I’d just have to go for it and ended up winning by ten seconds! I got all the turns, and Hallie tried to put in an extra one, but it was too tight. She wants to win.
“Next weekend we have the NAF Silver League at Pyecombe, and I would like to step her up and get some experience. We will probably jump a few Redpost Foxhunter first rounds, although she’s small, she has a bit of a stride.” Jessica said.
With another exciting Second Round now complete, attention turns towards the British Showjumping National Championships in August, where qualified combinations will look to continue their success on one of the sport’s biggest national stages.
