In the Saturday morning sunshine, the first Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Second Round of 2016 got off to a flying start at the British Showjumping North Cumbria Area Show. With only two qualification spots on offer for the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship Final, held at this year’s Horse of the Year Show, all fifty-one starters were eager for the action to begin.
With a sought after treble clear in their sights, seven valiant combinations made it through to the nerve jangling final jump off but only one combination kept their cool was able to produce an outstanding final clear to take victory!
It was Rachael Conner from Rossendale, Lancashire who produced three impressive clears on board her own 6 year-old chestnut gelding, Zaha, to take first place in style. The pair delivered an exceptionally precise jump off round to leave all the fences standing in a time of 47.93 seconds.
Stephen Lohoar from St. Andrews, Fife went home with second place on his own 8 year-old chestnut gelding Dante III. This combination put in a speedy round in the final jump off, posting a time of just 45.33 seconds, but they picked up an unfortunate four faults for a fallen pole which pushed them into second place.
With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show, the riders and horses that finished in third to fifth missed out on Championship qualification this time around. They did however take home the chance to compete in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
