Anneli Lister lifts the Equiyd 95cm National Amateur title on her championship debut

Anneli Lister made her Equiyd National Amateur and Veterans Championship debut a winning one with the Equiyd 95cm National Amateur Championship title with Miss Southburn Sarsaparilla at the Equiyd National Amateur and Veteran Championships.

An early effort in the 23-strong jump-off proved unbeatable and the pair secured the win by 0.15 seconds, denying Southerly Roberts and Charisma a second title.  Youngest of the class Lizzie Sargeant finished third with Luidam’s Girl.

“With so many behind me, I had to go for it and, if I got the turn to the [penultimate] oxer, I had to keep kicking to the last and got there on six strides; she’s sassy and quick across the ground,” said Anneli, who had qualified three sisters for this Championship – “We’ve bred them all, breeding one a year by our own stallion and out of an Irish Draught mare and I brought two of the sisters here.”

Apart from Dad Jan occasionally hacking out, only Anneli has ridden the Gibside Chips x Slievenamon 14-year-old Sarsaparilla.

These championships have been on Anneli’s radar but this was the first time she has managed to visit.

“I’m a teacher at Durham Academy and I’ve never dared ask for the time off before, but the headteacher was very kind.  I didn’t get here for the whole week but managed Thursday and Friday,” explained Anneli. “Next week I’ll be taking an assembly about following your dreams.”
