Sophie Windsor-Burrell lands the Equiyd 1.05m National Amateur Championship

Sophie Windsor-Burrell seized the Equiyd 1.05m National Amateur Championship with Kaiser Franz TN in a nail-biting jump-off at the Equiyd National Amateur and Veteran Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre.

Fifteen from the start list of 47 conquered the first round track to access the jump-off, with Sophie’s early round holding off all challenges, although a couple came agonisingly close, and she won with only 0.05 seconds to spare over Abi Leadbetter’s PJS Cruise.

“The course was good for us with a galloping jump-off but I was really only going for a clear – a double clear was a bonus.  I didn’t think I had a chance of winning as there were some fast riders behind me – especially last-to-go Tim Craggs – but the quick ones had the final fence down, that upright caught out a few,” said Sophie, who bought this 10-year-old Chaman x Sandro Boy mare three years ago.

“I had an older showjumper who didn’t help me out much, and I told Julian Mincher exactly what I wanted, and he found her for me; I’m so happy with everything I do with her.  She’s a livewire but so sweet, wants to please and loves the job as much as I do – and her favourite thing is having her ears massaged before and after a class, it keeps her calm.”

Sophie’s successful business WB Equiline has taken over a lot of her time this year and the number of shows has been limited to single figures.

“I’ve been concentrating on this business this year and it’s been hard to juggle my showjumping and fit it in, but it has worked this week,” added Sophie, who will give ‘Fran’ a mini break before aiming to achieve their qualifying double clears for next year’s Championships and targeting the Members Cup Final at the British Showjumping National Championships.
