After two days of Young Horse qualifying rounds, it was fifty cominations that will come forward into Sunday's Northcote Stud 5 year-old Championship and sixty-six into the Ashdale Sports Horses 4 year-old Championship.
Wednesday saw Laura Mantel achieve a 1-2 in the first Windmill Farm Estate 6 year-old qualifier on Maleficent and Aurora, a pair of Typhoon S sired mares owned by John and Laura Renwick. Third place was won by Ellen Whitaker aboard J Superstar.
Laura’s winning streak continued into Thursday evening, this time heading a field of over one hundred in the 5 year-old second round qualifier sponsored by Northcote Stud. Both second and fourth place went to Joseph Trunkfield on Harry Whall owned horses, while Chloe Reynolds concluded the top three.
Chantelle Duggan headed the first of the Al Shira’aa 7 year-old qualifiers with Margaret
Duggan’s Linton De La Chapelle. Laura Mantel was just behind for another top two placing, this time aboard MHS Alabama who is also owned by John Renwick. They were closely followed by William Funnell in third on Billy Marmite.
Joss Williams was another competitor to have enjoyed a very successful start to the show, with a 1st and 4th in the first round of the Voltaire Design 1.10m Open. Building on a great first day, he started the second with conviction by heading the Equerry Horse Feed 1.00m Open first round by the slimmest of margins on the 6 year-old mare, Kade Hof Ten Zoetendaele Z by just 0.03 seconds ahead of Nicola Withey, with Emily Morris nipping at their heels too.
Michaela Wood headed the second round of the Voltaire Design sponsored 1.10m Open,
aboard Martin Wood’s Billy Congo sired gelding, 2.2 seconds clear of the competition; Holly Johnstone in second, and another top three finish for Joss Williams. James Smith pulled off a convincing win on Tracey Brown’s KWPN gelding, Elmo Brown, in the Al Shira’aa Grand Prix Series Qualifier on Thursday morning, ahead of Adrian Whiteway & Max Routledge.
A huge first round of the AW Jenkinson Forest Products 1.20m Open saw a field of a hundred and thirty competitors jump, with an eventual win for Jake Myers on Zoe Legg’s Gerlina Van De Linthorst. Katie Shaw & Alex Bishop closely followed to fill the remaining top spots with Fools Business and Furore S. Thursday’s second round was taken by Adam Botham and Dewpoint Diamond with the consistent partnership of Alex Bishop and Furore S taking second place, building on their third place in Wednesday’s first round. Harry Bateman and Naughty Boy Z completed the top three.
The Equitop Myoplast 1.30 Open brought the second day of competition to a close with a win for Angel Tough aboard Emerson Tough’s KWPN gelding, Callumbus, 1.65 seconds clear of their nearest competition. Jonathan Dixon and Fireball earned themselves 2nd place with Angie Thompson and Madison Jamison nail-bitingly close behind and settling for equal honours in third place.
