Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds at Chard Equestrian Centre

The most recent Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds took place this weekend with Chard Equestrian Centre in Chard, Somerset holding the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m second round classes. Combinations from across the south west contested the classes with the hopes of securing a qualifying ticket to the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool between 9 - 14 November.

Seven of the starting field in the 85cm Second Round managed to navigate a first round clear across the course designed by Tony Mills, with five going on to bag a double clear. 14 years-old Katy Govier riding Dolderwydd Comet a 16 year-old bay gelding owned by Vicky Govier took the lead as they raced home clear in 27.74 seconds. Close on their heels and taking second place was Juliette Bostock and Little Owen.

In the 95cm Second Round, ten of the initial starting combinations produced a clear round over the ten-fence track with three going on to scoop a double clear. Liza Phillips from Seaton, Devon took the top spot with her own 9 year-old bay mare Pauldarys Promise, crossing the finish line in a time of 34.94 seconds. The runner up slot was filled by Sarah Major and Wilkismoor Main Attraction.

Moving on to the 1.05m, four combinations produced a first round clear across the thirteen fence track. 16 year-old Aimee Cooper from Canterbury, Kent riding Craig Cooper’s 18 year-old brown gelding Woodstock N took the win with five seconds in hand, crossing the finish line in 42.09. Also going clear and taking second place was Mollie Diment riding Somarilla II.

The 1.10m track proved a challenge with just two combinations going clear in the first round. Yeovil’s Mollie Diment on her own 7 year-old bright bay mare Somarilla II, rode tight lines to cross the finish line in 44.76 seconds to take the win following placing second in the 1.05m. Just behind them was Nikki Curtis and Billy Touchdown on 47.95 seconds.

Eight qualifying tickets are given for each of the four classes which are allocated once official grading has been completed. Those qualified for the championships in their specific height category can be found here.
