Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds at Dorset Showground

The third Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds took place this weekend with Dorset Showground in West Stour, Dorset holding the 85cm, 95cm, 1.05m and 1.10m second round classes. Combinations from across the south west contested the classes with the hopes of securing a qualifying ticket to the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool between 9 - 14 November.
Twelve of the starting field in the 85cm Second Round managed to negotiate a first round clear across the course designed by Krissy Spiller, with four going on to bag a double clear. Aboard Katie Hyde’s Guapa Alhaurino, 14 year-old Rupert Hyde from Bridgewater, Somerset had his foot firmly on the gas with the 11 year-old dark bay mare as they raced home clear in 55.47 seconds, more than 3 seconds ahead of second place, Sharlotte O’prey and Ashwood Kajinka.
In the 95cm Second Round, ten of the initial starting combinations produced a clear round over the ten-fence track with eight going on to scoop a double clear. Southerly Roberts from Hook, Hampshire took the top spot with her own 14 year-old grey gelding Wurlitzer Fair, crossing the finishing line in a time of 35.72 seconds. Close on their heels and taking second place was Rhian John and Arielle XV on 35.90 seconds.
Moving on to the 1.05m track, sixteen combinations produced a first round clear across the eleven-fence track with five combinations going double clear. Devon’s Jenny Spiller came out on top with her own Cheeky, a 19 year-old bay gelding, crossing the finish line in 40.10 seconds. The runner up slot was filled by Samantha Baker and Ramouncho De Gree.
Four of the initial starting field produced a clear in the first round over the 1.10m track with three combinations going double clear. Hannah Webber from Reading, Berkshire took the top spot with Wendy Webber’s Kristalanda II. The 6 year-old bay mare crossed the line in 44.65 seconds, just behind them was Jenny Spiller and Cheeky on 47.06 seconds.
Eight qualifying tickets are given for each of the four classes which are allocated once official grading has been completed. Those qualified for the championships in their specific height category can be found here.
