Tuesday 23 June 2026
The iconic grounds of Hickstead provided a spectacular setting for the Redpost Equestrian Senior Foxhunter Second Round at the weekend, with riders enjoying the unique atmosphere of competing on Derby Day as they chased qualification opportunities for two of the sport's most prestigious championships.
A total of 53 rider combinations came forward to take on Jason Abbs' demanding track, with the course proving a true test throughout the opening rounds. Just 11 combinations managed to produce clear rounds in both the first and second rounds to secure their place in the final jump-off, while many others saw their hopes dashed by an unfortunate pole.
With qualification places on offer for both the Senior Foxhunter Championship at the Horse of the Year Show and the British Showjumping National Championships, the pressure was firmly on as the remaining combinations returned for the decisive third round.
The first two horses, disregarding those already qualified, will secure their place at the Senior Foxhunter Championship at Horse of the Year Show, while the first five horses, again disregarding those already qualified, will qualify for the British Showjumping National Championships. In addition, any horse jumping clear in all three rounds of a Senior Foxhunter Second Round will also earn qualification for the National Championships.
Against the backdrop of one of the most famous showjumping arenas in the world, competitors rose to the challenge in front of an enthusiastic crowd, creating a memorable contest befitting the occasion.
