Samantha Haywood and Clonshire on Trend Lead the Way in the Nupafeed Discovery Second Round at Onley Grounds

The Nupafeed Supplements Senior Discovery Second Round at Onley Grounds Equestrian attracted a strong field of 46 rider and horse combinations at the weekend, all aiming to secure qualification for the prestigious final at the British Showjumping National Championships this August. 

Course designer Kevin Bull set a track that tested both accuracy and consistency, requiring riders to produce two faultless rounds to earn a place in the jump-off. The standard of competition was high throughout the class, with exactly half of the starters, 23 combinations, successfully navigating the first two rounds without fault to progress to the final decider. 

With qualification and victory on the line, the jump-off proved to be a thrilling contest. It was Samantha Haywood aboard David Ottewell's Clonshire on Trend who emerged victorious, producing a superb clear round in a lightning-fast time of 41.19 seconds to take the win. 

Ffion Roberts and Megalulu also delivered an impressive clear round to claim second place in 42.07 seconds, while Skye Jones and Jagadamba secured third place with another faultless performance, stopping the clock in 43.50 seconds. 

For those successful combinations, attention now turns to the British Showjumping National Championships, where they will have the opportunity to compete for one of the most sought-after titles of the summer season. 

“George is eleven and owned by David Ottewell, I have been riding him for a year. He’s an easy going horse at home and at shows, he can get a bit excitable in the warm up, especially going into the third round. He has his bunny hops and squeals sometimes, he just loves his job, really loves his jumping. He was eventing before but had a neck operation which meant he struggled with some aspects of that job, he’s careful and bred to jump, so we hoped he would take well to pure showjumping and enjoy it which he is. 

“It’s the first time George and I have been to Onley, I haven’t been for a few years. It’s a lovely venue with the big outdoor and open space which really suited George, with his eventing background he enjoyed running in that arena, he went back to his roots a little bit! The class was really good, the first round was nice and following, nothing too complicated as was the first jump off, George takes it all in his stride. The higher the fences get the more switched on he is and he can turn on a sixpence! He loves to jump off, that’s his thing, loves the speed and is careful.   

“The plan with him is to keep progressing, he has qualified for the Newcomers second rounds too but realistically we might not be ready as a partnership to jump those this year. George has done well already this year at Blue Chip and now picking up this qualification for BSNC, I haven’t been for a few years since my other horses retired so it will be good to go there again. Next year the hope would be to aim him at some International shows, he has the capability and is showing he’s quick against the clock. That’s our ultimate aim.” Samantha said.
