Michael McColm takes the win in the last STX-UK Pony Foxhunter Second Round of 2024

The final STX-UK Pony Foxhunter Second Round competition took place this weekend at Wales and West. Thirty-three competitors tackled the 1.10m track in the first round, and five advanced to the final jump-off.

The winners were 2023 Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Masters winners, Michael McColm and Legend Scais. The pair, first to go in the jump-off, thought their chances of winning were gone after knocking down two fences. However, their fast time of 32.41 seconds proved sufficient for victory. Michael shared his thoughts: “Going into the Foxhunter Second Round at Wales, there was no pressure as I had already qualified at Coombelands. I wanted to give him a confident round. In the first jump-off, he felt relaxed, so I rode the same way in the second jump-off. The jumps were quite big, but I had nothing to lose, so I went for it, resulting in two down but a fast time. Surprisingly, every combination after us also had two down, and our time won us the class. After his great performance, we entered him in the Pony Showjumper the following day, where he finished second and secured his qualification.”

Legend Scais, Michael's Christmas present in 2022, holds a special place in his heart. Michael said, “Legend is such an exciting pony for the future. We've owned him for 18 months, and at eight years old, he's taken everything in stride. This summer, he's qualified for Newcomers, Foxhunter, and Pony Showjumper of the Year, which very few ponies achieve.”

Second place went to Holly Jones on Trevadlock Golden Pearl, who also had two fences, but finished in a time of 34.94 seconds, just ahead of third placed Lola Thulborn and Tempo 2 Stroke.

Attention now turns to the STX-UK Pony Foxhunter Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships next week, where ponies and riders will have their last chance to qualify for the Championship Final at the Horse of the Year Show in October.
