Charlotte Page & Qrevette Gii take the top spot in the Pony Discovery Championship

Day three of the British Showjumping Indoor Championships at Aintree Equestrian Centre saw the pony national finals get underway and first up was Pony Discovery Championship which was contested by 45 eager starters.

In the 12 strong jump off, it was 14 year-old Olivia Sponer on Conella II who set the standard after delivering an early double clear in a super-fast time of 29.11 seconds. Olivia held onto this lead until the penultimate combination came into the arena.

Fifteen year-old Charlotte Page from Gillingham, Kent used her late draw to maximum effect on board Qrevette Gii, a 7 year-old chestnut mare owned by her father Neil. Knowing that only a double clear in an ultra-quick time would do, Charlotte set to work over Mark McGowan’s jump off track and the nimble Qrevette Gii made all of the tight turns look easy as she ate up the course in a forward rhythm. The pair were then able to take a stride out to the last fence and they came through the finish line in an unbeatable time of 28.39 seconds, much to the delight of those supporting them.

A delighted Charlotte said afterwards “We’ve had her [Qrevette Gii] since she was a five year-old and we broke her in ourselves after buying her from our friend Ann Gustavii who owns the Gustavii Stud. She’s my best pony on the yard, she’s my favourite and is very special. It’s really rewarding to have produced your own pony and win a Championship on it.”

Talking about the jump off, Charlotte commented “Olivia’s always really good competition and she always put pressure on in a jump off. I wasn’t planning to go that quickly but my Dad and I went through the course again to work out where we could save time. Qrevette Gii is naturally very quick on her turns and I can challenge her as she’s agile on her feet.”

Looking at the days ahead, Charlotte is now looking forward to competing in her first Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship, which runs on Sunday.

The British Showjumping Indoor Championships runs between the 7 – 11 October at Aintree Equestrian Centre with a number of the major British Showjumping national titles being run across the event.
