CHRIS BARCLAY LEVEL 3 JUDGE – RETIREMENT

Tuesday 13 October 2026

After more than 30 years of membership and over 20 years of officiating for British Showjumping, Level 3 Judge Chris Barclay has announced his retirement.

For more than two decades, Chris has been a cornerstone of the Scottish showjumping community. Based in Aberdeenshire, he has judged thousands of rounds, from local grassroots competitions to the country's more prestigious shows.

For 20 years, Chris’s iconic voice has been the backdrop to so many unforgettable moments at Turriff Show. Alongside his time at Blair Castle and Scone Palace International Horse Trials, these vibrant events were true highlights of his career, fueled by a competitive buzz and atmosphere that Chris loved dearly.

Chris first stepped into the judges' box through supporting his daughter on the Scottish showjumping circuit. He fondly recalls his early judging days in the sport—including one memorable evening arriving at a show with his daughter at 10pm, only to immediately step in and relieve his colleagues, judging straight through until the early hours of the morning.

Chris's presence, expertise, and familiar voice in the box will be deeply missed by colleagues, competitors, and spectators alike.

British Showjumping extends its heartfelt thanks to Chris for his dedication, passion, and commitment to our sport over the decades. We wish him the absolute best for a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.
