Tony Hackett, 20 May 1936 - 24 June 2023
Friday 07 July 2023
A familiar figure at horse shows across Worcestershire and neighbouring counties sadly died aged 87 on 24 June 2023. Tony Hackett had been a British Showjumping judge for 45 years but also officiated at a wide range of other events including BE Horse Trials, Riding and Pony Clubs and many unaffiliated shows.
He was also the BSJA Representative for Area 33 (Hereford and Worcester) for some 15 years from the late 1990's when the annual meetings for members were frequently attended by David Broome, our Regional Representative. Tony and the committee organised many Area 33 shows, grassroots training and an annual awards scheme.
For a large number of years Tony and Ron Notley were an unmistakable pair in the judge's box who would talk to the competitors whilst walking the course and setting up the timing equipment. When Ron died 10 years ago I took up the role of frequently judging with Tony, who became quite content operating the timing equipment. Our aim was always to ensure that everyone at the show had an enjoyable time whilst Tony helped to make the day pass quickly with plenty of light-hearted banter.
In more recent years mobility issues meant Tony was restricted to a limited number of local shows. He was due to judge at Feckenham but had to pull out a few weeks earlier. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in Redditch Hospital following a short illness on the day of Feckenham show. His funeral is to be held at 2.00 pm on Wednesday 26 July at Redditch Crematorium, B97 6RR.
We thank Tony for all he did for our sport, the memories and the good times.
Richard Tesh, with assistance of his daughter Jo
