Guy Williams wins the Thistledown Cup at Horse of the Year Show
Friday 08 October 2021
Yorkshire based Guy Williams used all his experience to take the feature jumping class on friday at the Horse of the Year Show.
Last to go in the jump off he produced a masterclass of jumping on the 16 year-old bay stallion Rouge to Ravel to beat Lily Attwood whom he has played a pivotal role mentoring in the past few years. Lily had managed to put in a fantastic round to stop the clock clear, one of only four managing to do so in the jump-off, in a time of 35.91 seconds and leaving the arena it had looked as if she had left no stone unturned. However Guy, who is known for being an incredibly fast rider when he needs to be, came forward as the last competitor of the night and had the crowds on their feet when he managed to twist his way round the course on a very forward going stride to shave almost a full second off their time.
Talking afterwards Guy said “He’s really fast and he got the best draw. I train Lily, we come from the same stables and she’s really fast so she made me work for it! To be honest my horse is very fast, he’s probably one of the fastest in the world when he gets going and today really suited him spinning back to the last plank. He’s such a good horse, he’s won a lot of classes.
My children wanted to come here, it’s a fantastic show for the children, Lily wanted to come as it’s the best atmosphere that you’ll ever get at a 3* show and we’re just pleased to be here.”
