Philip Spivey is victorious in the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Horse of the Year Show grade C Qualifier at Bicton Arena

Philip Spivey made the journey to Bicton Arena, Devon, worthwhile as landed the top spot of the British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Horse of the Year Show Grade C Qualifier with NBE Jenny Don’t Be Hasty.

“The last time I competed here, I qualified Romanov for the Foxhunter final, I think it’s my lucky place,” said Philip, who went on to win the HOYS Foxhunter final in 2005 on the stallion who became a top, five-star ride for Ireland’s Bertram Allen.

A total of 36 competitors came forward to chase the three HOYS qualifying places on offer in this class and faced course-designer Raf Suarez’s 12-fence 1.35m track.  Eight posted initial clear rounds to return to tackle the jump-off.

Philip found the shortest route, a tight turn into the double and following penultimate vertical securing the win with 1.42 seconds to spare on Sarah Hancock’s British-bred Temple Claudius x Isky De Baussy 8-year-old mare.

“She was unlucky last year and just missed out on qualifying for the Foxhunter final but won several 7-year-old classes in Vilamoura, Portugal.  She’s consistent and is stepping up to 1.40m but is a little quirky, although she tries her hardest.  She struggles to canter in a straight line, she goes left and right but once she has a jump in front of her, she’s good and focuses when she’s in the ring,” said Philip.  “She has a big stride and Bicton’s big arena suited, I could allow her to open up and she’s super-careful so I could let her run.”

Philip also had the pick of the weather – “Luckily, the qualifier was on Thursday as the heavens opened on Friday, it was torrential!”

British-based Australian Chris Burton claimed the second HOYS place on the 7-year-old mare Carly 14 (Check Point Charly x Grandeur) and James Winter booked his place at the prestigious NEC, Birmingham, show in October with the Dutch-bred 9-year-old Jargon K.
