Bob Ellis 1947 - 2026

British Showjumping is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the sport’s most respected and influential figures, Bob Ellis. 

A name synonymous with excellence in course design, Bob dedicated his life to the sport and leaves behind a remarkable legacy that has shaped showjumping in Britain. 

Bob began riding in the 1970s and, during his early career, worked alongside Nations Cup rider and eventual BBC commentator Steve Hadley. It was during this period that Bob not only learnt how to jump a pole but also developed an understanding of how to place one. While involved with shows held at Hilton Park, Bob discovered a second passion within the sport – course designing – a talent that would ultimately define his career. Less widely known was his success as a trainer, where his knowledge and expertise also helped develop both horses and riders. 

Affectionately known throughout the sport as “Bob the Builder”, Bob designed thousands of courses during an illustrious career that spanned more than four decades and took him to over 33 countries. His distinctive style, creativity and ability to challenge competitors while always prioritising horsemanship earned him international recognition and respect. 

His extensive CV included Pony, Junior and Young Rider European Championships, Senior European Championships, FEI World Cups and Nations Cups. However, his crowning achievement came when he was appointed Course Designer for the London 2012 Olympic Games, one of the highest honours in the sport. 

Reflecting on his fondest career memory, Great Britain’s team gold medal success at London 2012, Bob said: “I cried. We all cried! That was some moment.” 

In 2019, Bob completed his final year as Course Designer at the Horse of the Year Show, bringing to a close an extraordinary 44-year association with one of the sport’s most prestigious events. His contribution to HOYS and to showjumping as a whole is immeasurable. 

Throughout his career, Bob was admired not only for his professionalism, expertise and eye for detail, but also for his warmth, humour and unwavering passion for the sport. He inspired generations of riders, officials and fellow course designers, many of whom benefitted from his guidance and mentorship. 

Everyone at British Showjumping extends their sincere condolences to Bob’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. 

He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
