Roma Wood and Black Shore Storm Fly to Victory at CCR Equestrian

The STX-UK Pony British Novice Second Round took centre stage at CCR Equestrian on Monday, where 17 rider combinations came forward to contest Alison Naylor’s track in a competitive battle for qualification to the Final at the British Showjumping National Championships this August. 

Riders faced a challenging course, and with qualification places on the line, only eight combinations managed to jump clear through both opening rounds to secure their place in the jump-off. 

Taking top honours was Roma Wood riding Lewis Wood’s Black Shore Storm, who produced a fantastic clear to stop the clock in an impressive 34.90 seconds and secure the victory. 

Second place went to Jonty Hughes aboard Jahka Des Islots, who also delivered a stylish clear round in the jump-off with a time of 35.96 seconds, while Aliyah Rees claimed third place riding Keeneyside Tom Boy after another faultless performance in 41.00 seconds. 

“Roma has only had Black Shore Storm for five months and he is the first pony she has done much British Showjumping with, he is a young pony, six this time. They have done so well in a short time being together, it’s fantastic really. Where we keep the pony, Roma has regular lessons and has done for a number of years, she loves to show jump so that’s the route she has gone down. Our pony isn’t the easiest ride but with the regular help they have clicked well, he is still quite green on the flat so when they had such a great weekend, I was gobsmacked myself. Roma has had to really step up to ride this pony. 

“We travelled to Devon County on the Saturday to jump the Mini Major, paired with David Harland which they won, then won the Novice on Monday and also qualified for the Pony Discovery on Tuesday. David was such a gent, It was a big atmosphere at Devon County, it really gave Roma the confidence which set her up for the two second rounds at CCR. I did make a slight mistake with the Novice as I thought it was two rounds, so after we got the fastest time in round two we thought we had won but then realised when they judges mentioned it that there was a third round, but still managed to get the fastest round in the jump off, it was a fantastic weekend. 

“Roma’s ultimate goal would be to qualify for HOYS, but this year she is really looking forward to jumping at the National Championships.” Lewis, Roma’s dad commented. 

For those who secured qualification, attention will now turn towards the Final at the British Showjumping National Championships in August, where the country’s top pony combinations will battle it out for championship honours.
